Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform routine and scheduled preventive maintenance (PM) on fleet vehicles including oil changes, filter replacements, lubrication, inspections, and routine tune-ups to maximize vehicle life and minimize downtime.
  • Diagnose complex mechanical, electrical, and electronic problems using diagnostic tools (OBD-II scanners, multimeters, oscilloscopes, CAN bus analyzers) and systematic troubleshooting methods, then develop and implement repair plans.
  • Inspect and maintain brake systems (air and hydraulic), including adjustment, repair, replacement of components, and ensuring compliance with DOT brake performance standards.
  • Overhaul, repair, and replace engines, transmissions (manual and automatic), differentials, drivetrains, and related components for both gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles.
  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on HVAC and climate control systems, including refrigerant handling per EPA regulations and heater/core repairs to ensure operator comfort and safety.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, document findings, and ensure defects are repaired before release to service; prioritize safety-critical defects for immediate repair.

  • Follow and enforce shop safety procedures, including lockout/tagout, LOTO, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and safe operation of lifts, hoists, and tooling to minimize workplace incidents.
  • Test drive repaired vehicles to verify repairs, assess drivability, and ensure that issues are fully resolved before returning vehicles to service.
  • Perform diagnostic electrical work including wiring repair, alternator and starter testing, battery testing and replacement, and troubleshooting of vehicle control modules and sensors.
  • Perform welding, fabrication, and structural repairs on frames, bodies, and chassis components to maintain structural integrity and safety of vehicles and equipment.
  • Carry out emissions system inspections, component replacement (e.g., catalytic converters, EGRs), and ensure vehicles meet local and federal environmental regulations and emissions standards.
  • Prepare accurate repair estimates, parts/work time quotes, and communicate costs and timelines clearly with fleet managers, drivers, or external customers to set expectations and secure approvals.
  • Implement and document repair procedures and standard operating practices (SOPs) to improve consistency, reduce rework, and support training of new technicians.
  • Mentor and train junior technicians and apprentices on best practices, diagnostic methodology, and safe work habits to elevate shop capability and efficiency.
  • Coordinate with external vendors, warranty providers, and OEM technical support to troubleshoot complex or warranty-covered issues and pursue credits where applicable.
  • Monitor vehicle performance metrics (MTTR, MTBF, downtime, cost-per-mile) and participate in continuous improvement initiatives to reduce unplanned downtime and maintenance costs.
  • Ensure compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, annual inspections, and maintenance documentation required for commercial vehicles and drivers.
  • Dispose of hazardous materials (oils, coolant, batteries) safely and in accordance with environmental, health, and safety (EHS) regulations; maintain MSDS/SDS records and recycling logs.
  • Use precision measuring tools, torque wrenches, and diagnostic calibration equipment to ensure repairs meet OEM torque, clearance, and performance specifications.
  • Assist with vehicle decommissioning, fleet asset tracking, and surplus processes, including preparation for auction or disposal and documentation of component salvageability.
  • Collaborate with scheduling and operations teams to minimize vehicle downtime, coordinate maintenance windows, and support shift coverage for continuous operations.

Required Skills & Competencies

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
