Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Assess customer modification requests, read and interpret engineering drawings, OEM specifications, and technical schematics to develop detailed installation plans and bill of materials for vehicle upfits, mobility conversions, and specialty equipment integration.
  • Execute full vehicle upfits including fabrication and installation of shelving, racks, bulkheads, lighting, sirens, communication systems, tool storage, and specialized equipment for utility, emergency response, and service fleets while ensuring structural integrity and OEM warranty compliance.
  • Design, fabricate, and install custom mounting brackets, subframes, control panels, and reinforcement structures using metalworking skills such as MIG/TIG welding, bending, shearing, and precision drilling to meet fit, function, and safety requirements.
  • Perform complex electrical integrations: wire lighting systems, power distribution modules, battery isolators, auxiliary power units, CAN-bus interfacing, relays, fuses, and control switches; troubleshoot and certify electrical installations using multimeters and diagnostic tools.
  • Install and commission hydraulic and pneumatic systems including pumps, reservoirs, cylinders, valves, filters, hoses, quick-disconnects, and safety devices for liftgates, aerial devices, dump systems, and hoists; conduct pressure tests and cycle testing to validate system performance.
  • Complete mobility and accessibility conversions (ramps, wheelchair lifts, adaptive controls) in compliance with ADA guidelines and local regulations; verify clearances, anchor points, securement systems, and passenger safety elements.
  • Coordinate retrofits and package integrations for emergency vehicles: install emergency lighting, sirens, radio systems, in-vehicle computing, prisoner transport modifications, and medical equipment mounting while maintaining emergency vehicle standards.
  • Execute vehicle diagnostics and root-cause analysis for fitment/interference, electrical faults, hydraulic leaks, or drivability impacts introduced by modifications; implement corrective actions and document resolutions.
  • Produce accurate time and labor estimates, cost quotes, and parts proposals for projects; work with procurement and parts departments to source OEM and aftermarket components in a timely, cost-effective manner.
  • Adhere to FMVSS, DOT, OSHA, ADA, and local regulatory requirements; prepare compliance documentation, modified vehicle certifications, and work with third-party inspectors as required.
  • Perform pre-delivery checks, road tests, and quality assurance inspections to validate function, durability, and safety of installed systems; generate punch lists and coordinate final fixes prior to customer handover.
  • Maintain detailed work orders, change logs, wiring diagrams, as-built drawings, and installation manuals to ensure traceability and support future service or warranty work.
  • Lead or participate in project scheduling and resource allocation to meet delivery timelines for single-vehicle customizations and larger fleet upfit programs while communicating progress to project managers and customers.
  • Mentor, train, and coach junior upfit technicians and apprentices on safe fabrication practices, wiring standards, component installation, and manufacturer installation instructions to improve team capability and throughput.
  • Maintain and calibrate specialized tools and equipment, including welders, crimpers, hydraulic test stands, lifts, and diagnostic scanners to ensure safe and accurate installations.
  • Work directly with sales and account managers to translate customer needs into technical solutions and communicate potential engineering constraints, lead times, and pricing impacts.
  • Implement continuous improvement activities: propose process changes, tooling upgrades, and standard operating procedures to increase efficiency, reduce rework, and improve shop safety.
  • Coordinate with OEM dealer service departments and warranty teams to preserve vehicle warranties and obtain necessary approvals for non-standard modifications or driveline penetrations.
  • Manage parts inventory and material usage for assigned projects: create kit lists, track stock levels, and process returns/manufacturing credits for unused parts or warranty claims.
  • Prepare and present technical project updates and final acceptance reports to customers, fleet managers, or municipal procurement contacts, ensuring clear documentation of scope, deviations, and post-delivery support.
  • Respond to post-delivery service requests and warranty repairs; diagnose failures attributable to installations and execute corrective repairs in a timely, customer-focused manner.
  • Ensure shop and vehicle work areas comply with safety, environmental, and hazardous materials handling standards; maintain MSDS documentation and manage disposal of solvents and batteries.
  • Participate in mock-ups and prototyping of new equipment packages; collaborate with in-house engineering or external suppliers to validate fitment and ergonomics prior to full production.
  • Track labor hours, job costs, and material variances; report project performance metrics and support continuous improvement targets for shop throughput and job profitability.

  • Assist sales and account teams by conducting technical site surveys, vehicle inspections, and feasibility assessments for potential modification contracts and fleet programs.
  • Provide technical input to product selection and vendor evaluation processes; support sourcing of specialty components and negotiation of supplier terms.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements
