Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Meticulously prepare vehicle surfaces for painting by sanding, cleaning, and degreasing panels to ensure proper adhesion and a flawless finish.
Expertly mask and tape off vehicle trim, glass, and non-painted areas to protect them from overspray and ensure clean, sharp paint lines.
Operate and maintain computerized paint mixing and measuring equipment to accurately match OEM and custom color formulations.
Apply primers, sealers, and other undercoats as required, ensuring proper film build and chemical compatibility with the topcoat.
Skillfully operate HVLP (High Volume, Low Pressure) and other professional spray guns to apply basecoats and clearcoats, achieving a smooth, even, and defect-free finish.
Perform advanced blending techniques on adjacent panels to create an invisible repair and seamless color transition.
Disassemble and reassemble vehicle components such as bumpers, mirrors, and handles to allow for complete and thorough paint coverage.
Conduct final quality control inspections of all finished work, identifying and correcting any imperfections like runs, sags, orange peel, or fish-eyes.
Perform final finishing work, including wet sanding, compounding, polishing, and buffing, to achieve the desired level of gloss and texture.
Maintain a pristine work environment, including the regular cleaning and maintenance of the paint booth, mixing room, and all related equipment.
Adhere strictly to all safety protocols, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) like respirators, gloves, and protective suits.
Follow all environmental regulations concerning paint and chemical usage, storage, and disposal, especially regarding VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds).
Accurately document all materials used and labor time spent on each job by updating repair orders and internal tracking systems.
Troubleshoot and resolve common paint application issues, utilizing deep knowledge of paint chemistry and environmental factors.
Stay current with the latest industry trends, techniques, and technologies, including waterborne paint systems and advanced refinishing tools.
Collaborate closely with body technicians to ensure surfaces are properly repaired and prepared before entering the paint stage.
Manage an inventory of paints, clearcoats, and other refinishing supplies, communicating needs to the parts or supply manager.
Perform minor bodywork, such as applying and shaping finishing putty or glaze, to correct minor surface imperfections before priming.
Tint and adjust colors by eye when necessary to achieve a perfect match on challenging colors or aged paint.
Ensure all repairs meet or exceed OEM and I-CAR standards for quality and durability.

Color Theory & Matching: A keen eye for color and proficiency with computerized paint mixing systems (e.g., PPG Envirobase, Axalta Cromax) and spectrophotometers.

I-CAR (ProLevel 1-3) or ASE certification in Painting & Refinishing (B2) is highly valued.
