Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform comprehensive multi-point inspections and vehicle health checks to accurately identify necessary maintenance or repair needs, documenting findings for service advisors and customers.
  • Diagnose complex mechanical and electrical malfunctions using advanced diagnostic scan tools, wiring diagrams, and other specialized testing equipment to pinpoint root causes effectively.
  • Execute a wide range of automotive repairs, including but not limited to engine, transmission, driveline, steering, suspension, and brake systems, ensuring all work meets or exceeds manufacturer specifications.
  • Conduct thorough testing of vehicle systems and components post-repair to verify fixes, ensure operational integrity, and prevent comebacks.
  • Perform routine and scheduled maintenance services such as oil changes, filter replacements, fluid exchanges, and tune-ups with precision and efficiency.
  • Address and resolve customer concerns related to vehicle drivability, performance issues, and unusual noises by applying systematic diagnostic strategies.
  • Mount, balance, and install tires, and perform precision four-wheel alignments using modern alignment equipment.
  • Service and repair vehicle heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, including refrigerant evacuation, recharge, and component replacement.
  • Diagnose and repair advanced vehicle electronics, including onboard computer systems, infotainment, navigation, and lighting systems.
  • Execute intricate engine repair and replacement tasks, including timing belts, head gaskets, and full engine overhauls.
  • Address and repair issues within vehicle exhaust systems, including catalytic converters, mufflers, and oxygen sensors to ensure emissions compliance.
  • Keep meticulous and accurate digital records of all services performed, parts used, and time spent on each repair order.
  • Road-test vehicles before and after service to verify customer complaints and confirm that all repairs have been completed successfully.
  • Calibrate and troubleshoot Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS), including cameras, radar, and sensors, to ensure proper functionality and vehicle safety.
  • Communicate technical findings and repair recommendations clearly and concisely to Service Advisors to facilitate transparent customer communication.
  • Handle warranty and recall-related repairs according to strict manufacturer guidelines and documentation requirements.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, adhering to all shop safety protocols and environmental regulations.
  • Proactively participate in ongoing factory and industry training to stay current with new vehicle technologies, diagnostic procedures, and service techniques.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to apprentice technicians, sharing knowledge and best practices to help develop their skills.
  • Manage and maintain personal and company-provided tools and equipment, ensuring they are in proper working order.
  • Assist the service team in meeting and exceeding production targets and customer satisfaction goals.
  • Provide expert technical advice and support to other team members, including service advisors and parts department staff.
  • Contribute to a positive and collaborative team environment, demonstrating a commitment to teamwork and mutual respect.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency with modern automotive diagnostic equipment, including scan tools, oscilloscopes, and multimeters.
  • Strong knowledge of automotive electrical systems, including the ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams.
  • ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certifications (A1-A9) are highly preferred.
  • In-depth understanding of internal combustion engine, transmission, and driveline theory and repair.
  • Experience with servicing and repairing brake, steering, and suspension systems.
  • Competency in performing vehicle alignments and tire services.
  • Knowledge of HVAC system diagnostics and repair, including EPA 609 certification.
  • Familiarity with digital vehicle inspection (DVI) software and shop management systems.

Soft Skills

  • Exceptional problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities to diagnose complex and intermittent issues.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • A valid and clean driver's license.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's degree or certificate from a post-secondary automotive technology program (e.g., UTI, Lincoln Tech).

Relevant Fields of Study:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 2-5+ years of professional, hands-on experience as a vehicle service technician in a dealership or independent repair shop.

Preferred:

  • Manufacturer-specific training or certifications (e.g., Ford, GM, Toyota, BMW).
  • Experience working in a high-volume dealership or independent shop environment.
  • Master ASE certification is highly desirable and often rewarded.
