Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Methodically strip old upholstery, padding, and fasteners from interior components such as seats, door panels, and headliners to prepare the foundational frame for restoration.
- Precisely measure, mark, and cut various upholstery materials, including leather, vinyl, Alcantara, and cloth, optimizing for yield and ensuring pattern accuracy.
- Operate industrial-grade sewing machines (e.g., single-needle, double-needle, walking foot) to stitch materials, executing complex patterns and ensuring durable, aesthetically pleasing seams.
- Skillfully stretch, fit, and secure new upholstery covers and padding onto vehicle frames using hand tools like staple guns, hog ring pliers, and steamers to achieve a flawless, wrinkle-free finish.
- Disassemble and reassemble complex vehicle interior components, including seats with heating/cooling elements, airbags, and power controls, ensuring all functions are retained.
- Sculpt and shape foam padding for seats and other components to restore original contours, enhance comfort, or create custom designs.
- Install complete automotive carpet kits, ensuring proper fitment around consoles, pedals, and seat tracks, often including sound-deadening material underneath.
- Fabricate and install custom-fit headliners, ensuring they are taut and seamlessly integrated with pillars, sun visors, and dome lights.
- Perform detailed repair work on existing upholstery, including fixing tears, burns, and seam splits, and color-matching materials for invisible repairs.
- Interpret work orders, technical diagrams, and custom design specifications to ensure the final product meets client and company standards.
- Install and repair convertible tops, vinyl tops, and simulated convertible tops, ensuring a weather-tight seal and perfect alignment.
- Inspect all finished work for quality control, checking for imperfections in stitching, fitment, and overall appearance before vehicle delivery.
- Maintain and perform minor repairs on all upholstery tools and equipment, including sewing machines, to ensure they remain in excellent working order.
- Create new patterns and templates from scratch for custom jobs or when original patterns are unavailable for classic car restorations.
Secondary Functions
