Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform comprehensive multi-point vehicle inspections, covering mechanical, electrical, and fluid systems to identify existing issues and proactively prevent future breakdowns.
  • Execute routine preventative maintenance tasks such as oil changes, lubrication, fluid top-offs, and filter replacements according to manufacturer schedules and company standards.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot vehicle malfunctions using a combination of manual testing, computerized diagnostic equipment (e.g., OBD-II scanners), and an in-depth knowledge of automotive systems.
  • Conduct a full range of tire services including mounting, balancing, rotation, and flat repairs, ensuring proper inflation and tread depth for optimal safety and performance.
  • Inspect, diagnose, and perform repairs on vehicle braking systems, which includes replacing brake pads, rotors, calipers, and servicing hydraulic brake lines to meet safety specifications.
  • Address complex issues within vehicle steering and suspension systems, performing alignments and replacing shocks, struts, and other critical components to ensure vehicle stability and driver control.
  • Service and repair vehicle heating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, including performing refrigerant recharges, detecting leaks, and replacing compressors or condensers.
  • Maintain and replace vehicle batteries, starters, and alternators, performing diagnostic tests to ensure the reliability of the entire electrical charging and starting system.
  • Perform minor to moderate engine and transmission repairs, including the replacement of belts, hoses, water pumps, gaskets, and other accessible components.
  • Utilize technical service bulletins, digital diagrams, and online professional resources to stay updated on repair procedures and diagnose complex vehicle issues accurately.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate service records for all work performed, meticulously documenting parts used, labor time, and vehicle condition for internal tracking and customer reporting.
  • Ensure the work area is kept clean, safe, and organized, adhering to all shop safety protocols, environmental regulations, and procedures for handling hazardous materials.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with service advisors, team leads, or supervisors regarding vehicle status, required repairs, parts orders, and estimated completion times.
  • Operate a variety of company and customer vehicles, including cars, light trucks, and vans, for diagnostic test drives and for moving them safely within the service facility.
  • Perform pre-delivery inspections (PDI) on new vehicles or pre-rental inspections on fleet vehicles to ensure they meet all operational, safety, and quality standards before use.
  • Install, service, and repair vehicle exhaust system components, such as mufflers, catalytic converters, and pipes, to ensure compliance with emissions standards and proper engine performance.
  • Clean and detail vehicle interiors and exteriors as needed, preparing them for service, sale, or rental to maintain a high standard of presentation and customer satisfaction.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Diagnostic Acumen: Proficiency in using OBD-II scanners, multimeters, and other specialized diagnostic tools to accurately identify mechanical and electrical faults.
  • Preventative Maintenance: Strong knowledge of vehicle maintenance schedules and procedures for oil changes, fluid flushes, belt replacements, and filter replacements.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 1-5+ years of hands-on experience in an automotive repair shop, dealership, or fleet maintenance environment.

Preferred: Experience working with a variety of vehicle makes and models. Documented history of ASE certifications (e.g., A1-A8, G1) is highly desirable and often correlates with higher proficiency and compensation.
