Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Provide direct, hands-on technical support and expert troubleshooting to early-stage startups within the venture portfolio, addressing challenges in software, hardware, or scientific instrumentation.
  • Manage and maintain the operational integrity of critical lab, workshop, or server infrastructure, ensuring all equipment is calibrated, compliant, and fully functional for portfolio company use.
  • Lead the setup, configuration, and teardown of complex technical demonstrations and proof-of-concept environments for potential investments, board meetings, and partner showcases.
  • Conduct initial technical feasibility assessments on new deal flow opportunities, providing the investment team with a foundational analysis of a startup's technology stack, architecture, or scientific approach.
  • Develop and fabricate early-stage prototypes and minimum viable products (MVPs) using methods like 3D printing, custom electronics assembly, or rapid software development frameworks.
  • Serve as the primary technical point of contact and trusted advisor for a cohort of portfolio companies, facilitating their access to shared resources, expertise, and infrastructure.
  • Design and implement standardized operating procedures (SOPs) for shared technical facilities, ensuring safety, compliance, and the efficient, equitable utilization of resources.
  • Manage the complete lifecycle of technical inventory, including supplies, components, and consumables, by overseeing procurement, managing vendor relationships, and tracking budgets.
  • Assist in the formal technical due diligence process by pressure-testing software, evaluating hardware designs, or validating experimental data presented by potential investments.
  • Onboard new portfolio companies and their technical teams into the firm's ecosystem, providing comprehensive training on available tools, platforms, and lab protocols.
  • Create and maintain detailed documentation for all technical systems, internal processes, and experimental setups to build a reusable and scalable knowledge base for the portfolio.
  • Administer and optimize shared cloud computing resources (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure), helping startups scale their infrastructure efficiently, securely, and cost-effectively.
  • Collaborate with the investment team to translate complex technical concepts from prospective companies into clear, concise summaries for non-technical stakeholders and investment committee memos.
  • Perform and document regular preventative maintenance on high-value capital equipment to minimize downtime, extend its operational lifespan, and protect the firm's assets.
  • Support the development of custom software tools and automation scripts to improve the operational efficiency of the venture firm itself and its portfolio companies.
  • Stay at the forefront of emerging technologies, tools, and methodologies within the relevant industry (e.g., life sciences, deep tech, SaaS) to provide informed recommendations and maintain a competitive edge.
  • Evaluate and recommend new technologies, equipment, and software platforms for inclusion in the firm’s shared resource pool to continuously enhance portfolio company capabilities.
  • Facilitate technical workshops and training sessions for the portfolio community on topics ranging from specific software tools to best practices in agile development or laboratory techniques.
  • Act as a technical liaison between startups and external vendors or specialized service providers, ensuring clear communication of requirements and successful project execution.
  • Install, configure, and manage specialized software applications and enterprise systems used across the portfolio, from CRMs to data analysis platforms and security tools.
  • Contribute to defining and enforcing the physical and digital security posture of the firm's technical assets and the sensitive intellectual property of its portfolio companies.
  • Systematically collect and analyze usage data from shared resources and labs to generate insights that inform future investment in infrastructure and strategic resource allocation.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Experience with cloud infrastructure management and services (AWS, Google Cloud Platform, or Azure), including resource provisioning and cost optimization.
