Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop, maintain and execute a venue-wide sustainability strategy and annual action plan that aligns with organizational objectives, reduces operational carbon emissions, increases resource efficiency and supports industry certifications (e.g., LEED, Green Key, ISO 14001).
  • Lead energy management initiatives including benchmarking, identifying and implementing energy efficiency projects (lighting retrofits, HVAC optimization, controls upgrades), tracking energy consumption and delivering measurable cost savings.
  • Conduct regular energy, water and waste audits for venue operations and event setups; analyze findings and recommend prioritized capital and behavioral interventions to improve performance.
  • Build and manage the venue’s carbon inventory and emissions reduction roadmap using recognized protocols (GHG Protocol), track progress against reduction targets and prepare scope 1–3 emissions reporting.
  • Design and implement waste reduction and diversion programs (zero-waste events, front-of-house and back-of-house recycling, composting logistics), measure diversion rates and partner with waste vendors to optimize service delivery.
  • Create and administer sustainable procurement policies and green purchasing guidelines for food & beverage, packaging, cleaning products and event materials to support lifecycle impact reduction and supplier engagement.
  • Partner with event producers, promoters and internal event teams to integrate sustainability requirements into event planning (site plans, load-in/load-out, production equipment, catering and backstage operations) and achieve event-level sustainability KPIs.
  • Manage sustainability-related capital projects by writing project specifications, coordinating with engineering and contractors, tracking budgets, timelines and technical deliverables, and ensuring post-installation performance verification.
  • Oversee water conservation programs: identify leaks, recommend low-flow fixtures, implement irrigation improvements and monitor water consumption reduction measures across the site.
  • Implement and maintain environmental management systems (EMS) and documentation to support third-party certification, regulatory compliance and continuous improvement practices.
  • Develop and deliver staff, contractor and volunteer training programs to embed sustainable operations into daily work routines, event setup, waste sorting, and energy-conscious behaviors.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of local, regional and national environmental regulations affecting venue operations, ensuring compliance for permitting, reporting and operational practices.
  • Prepare, compile and present monthly/quarterly sustainability dashboards and executive reports with clear KPIs (energy, water, waste, GHG, cost savings) and actionable recommendations for leadership and stakeholders.
  • Coordinate vendor and contractor sustainability expectations, performance tracking and contract language; conduct pre-qualification reviews and audits for sustainability compliance.
  • Lead guest-facing sustainability communications and signage strategies for events and venue areas to increase transparency, participant engagement and customer satisfaction.
  • Manage grant applications, incentive programs and utility rebate processes to secure external funding for energy efficiency, renewable projects and sustainability initiatives.
  • Support renewable energy initiatives (on-site solar feasibility, virtual PPAs, renewable energy credits) and collaborate with finance to evaluate payback, ROI and greenhouse gas impacts.
  • Conduct lifecycle assessments and materials audits for capital projects and major events to minimize embodied carbon and single-use plastics through alternative materials and reusable systems.
  • Develop emergency and contingency plans that integrate environmental risk management (spill response, hazardous waste handling, resilience planning for extreme weather).
  • Act as primary liaison for sustainability audits and site visits by certification bodies, government agencies and stakeholders; prepare materials, host walkthroughs and implement remediation plans from audit findings.
  • Establish cross-functional steering groups and working committees with operations, F&B, production and procurement to drive program adoption and maintain momentum on sustainability goals.
  • Create and manage budgets for sustainability programs, track expenditures, forecast resource needs and demonstrate financial benefits via avoided costs and operational efficiencies.
  • Use data analytics tools (Excel, energy management systems, CAFM, building automation) to mine operational data, identify trends and model opportunities for performance improvement.
  • Monitor and report supplier sustainability performance; collaborate on supplier improvement plans and encourage green innovation in service and product offerings.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc sustainability data requests and exploratory analysis to inform executive decisions and capital planning.
  • Assist marketing and community relations teams with sustainability messaging, case studies, press materials and guest education campaigns.
  • Contribute to event sustainability RFP responses, venue bids and stakeholder presentations with program metrics and capability statements.
  • Participate in cross-functional project teams for venue renovations and new builds to ensure sustainability is integrated early in design and procurement.
  • Support volunteer coordination and community engagement programs for public-facing sustainability events or clean-up initiatives.
  • Maintain inventories of sustainability assets (meters, compost bins, EV chargers) and manage maintenance schedules with operations staff.
