Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Provide compassionate and attentive nursing care to all patients, including those that are hospitalized, recovering from surgery, or in for routine check-ups.
- Safely and humanely restrain animals of various sizes and temperaments for examinations, procedures, and sample collection, ensuring the safety of both the pet and the veterinary team.
- Assist veterinarians and technicians during physical exams and surgical procedures by preparing instruments, supplies, and the operating room.
- Accurately collect, prepare, and run in-house laboratory samples, including blood, urine, and fecal matter, or package them for external laboratory analysis.
- Prepare animal patients for surgery by clipping and sterilizing surgical sites, and setting up monitoring equipment in the surgical suite.
- Diligently monitor patients under anesthesia, tracking vital signs such as heart rate, respiratory rate, and temperature, and immediately reporting any changes to the veterinarian.
- Administer medications, vaccinations, and treatments orally, topically, or via injection as prescribed and directed by the supervising veterinarian.
- Skillfully capture and process digital radiographs (X-rays), ensuring proper patient positioning and adhering to all radiation safety protocols.
- Educate clients on essential topics such as preventative care, proper administration of medications, post-operative instructions, and nutritional guidelines.
- Maintain meticulous and accurate patient medical records by documenting all treatments, observations, client communications, and procedures in our practice management software.
- Triage incoming patient calls and walk-in emergencies, quickly gathering critical information to help the veterinary team prioritize cases effectively.
- Discharge patients by clearly and compassionately communicating aftercare instructions, medication schedules, and follow-up appointment details to clients.
Secondary Functions
- Maintain a sterile and organized environment by cleaning, disinfecting, and stocking all examination rooms, treatment areas, and surgical suites.
- Manage the cleaning, wrapping, and sterilization of surgical instruments and other medical equipment to ensure they are ready for use.
- Provide daily care for hospitalized and boarding animals, including feeding, watering, exercising, and cleaning kennels, while closely observing their behavior and condition.
- Assist the front desk team by answering phones, scheduling appointments, and greeting clients with a warm and professional demeanor during peak times.
- Manage inventory of medical supplies, pet food, and pharmaceuticals by tracking stock levels, restocking shelves, and alerting management to ordering needs.
- Process client payments, generate invoices, and assist clients with understanding their pet's treatment plan costs.
- Provide compassionate support to clients during difficult times, including during euthanasia procedures, demonstrating empathy and professionalism.
- Prepare and accurately dispense prescription medications as directed by the veterinarian, ensuring correct labeling and client understanding.
