Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Provide safe, compassionate, and effective animal restraint for examinations, sample collections, and various medical procedures to ensure the safety of both the patient and the veterinary team.
- Assist veterinarians and technicians during physical examinations by preparing the exam room, gathering patient history from clients, and accurately recording vital signs like temperature, pulse, and respiration.
- Offer compassionate nursing care to hospitalized and post-operative patients, including monitoring their comfort, providing clean bedding, ensuring access to food and water, and reporting any changes in status to the medical team.
- Master and maintain a high standard of cleanliness and sanitation throughout the hospital, including the sterilization of surgical instruments, and the disinfection of exam rooms, kennels, and treatment areas.
- Prepare and accurately dispense medications as prescribed by the veterinarian, and clearly communicate administration instructions to pet owners.
- Educate clients on fundamental aspects of animal health and wellness, including preventative care, parasite control, nutritional recommendations, and post-operative home care instructions.
- Facilitate a smooth patient flow by anticipating the needs of the veterinarians, preparing for upcoming appointments, and ensuring all necessary supplies and equipment are ready.
- Collect, prepare, and process laboratory samples such as blood, urine, and feces for in-house analysis or for shipment to external laboratories.
- Assist in acquiring diagnostic images by positioning patients for radiographs (X-rays) and supporting the technician or veterinarian during the process.
- Monitor and care for animals recovering from anesthesia and surgery, paying close attention to their vital signs and comfort levels.
- Perform basic animal husbandry tasks such as feeding, walking, and bathing patients as needed, ensuring their basic needs and comfort are always met.
- Manage the admission and discharge of patients for appointments, surgeries, and boarding, ensuring all paperwork is completed and client questions are answered thoroughly.
- Triage incoming calls and walk-in emergencies to assess urgency and provide initial guidance to pet owners before the veterinarian is available.
- Maintain precise and detailed medical records by documenting all treatments, observations, and communications in the practice's information management system.
- Provide emotional support and empathy to clients during stressful and emotional situations, including discussing patient prognosis and end-of-life care.
