Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Manage a primary caseload of outpatient and hospitalized patients, from initial assessment through discharge, under the supervision of senior veterinarians.
- Perform comprehensive physical examinations and develop thorough patient histories to formulate a prioritized list of differential diagnoses.
- Design, implement, and adapt diagnostic plans, including the selection and interpretation of tests like bloodwork, urinalysis, cytology, and diagnostic imaging.
- Develop and execute evidence-based therapeutic plans for a wide variety of medical and surgical cases, including fluid therapy, medication administration, and nutritional support.
- Gain proficiency in common surgical procedures, including spays, neuters, and minor soft tissue surgeries, while assisting specialists in complex surgical cases.
- Provide immediate medical assessment and stabilization for critically ill or injured patients presenting on an emergency basis.
- Perform and refine technical skills such as intravenous catheter placement, phlebotomy, abdominocentesis, thoracocentesis, and CPR.
- Communicate complex medical information, treatment plans, and prognoses to pet owners with clarity, empathy, and professionalism.
- Maintain meticulous and accurate medical records in a timely manner, documenting all aspects of patient care, client communication, and billing.
- Participate actively in daily patient rounds, presenting case summaries, diagnostic findings, and treatment strategies to the clinical team.
- Collaborate effectively with veterinary specialists, residents, technicians, and client service representatives to ensure cohesive and optimal patient care.
- Manage anesthetic procedures for a variety of patients and surgeries, including protocol selection, patient monitoring, and recovery management.
