- Perform routine hematology testing (manual and automated) including CBCs, blood smear preparation and interpretation, PCV/TP measurements, and reticulocyte counts while following established protocols and document results in LIMS.
- Conduct clinical chemistry analyses using automated analyzers; set up runs, calibrate instruments, prepare controls and reagents, evaluate QC trends, and troubleshoot common analyzer alerts and flags.
- Run and interpret point-of-care and benchtop immunoassays and serology tests (SNAP, ELISA-based assays), prepare reagents, load and read plates, record raw data, and verify results against internal controls prior to release.
- Perform molecular testing workflows (e.g., PCR/qPCR) under supervision or as trained, including nucleic acid extraction, master mix preparation, plate setup, thermocycler operation, and contamination control practices with detailed run documentation.
- Prepare, stain, and evaluate cytology slides for preliminary findings; prepare fine needle aspirates and impression smears, document cellularity and notable features, and flag slides for veterinarian/pathologist review.
- Culture and isolate bacterial and fungal organisms from clinical specimens, perform streak plating, incubate cultures, carry out Gram stains and rapid biochemical tests (catalase, coagulase), and prepare isolates for antimicrobial susceptibility testing.
- Perform antimicrobial susceptibility testing according to guidelines (e.g., CLSI), interpret zone diameters or MICs, document results, and prepare isolates and paperwork for referral to external reference laboratories when needed.
- Maintain and operate microscopy equipment, centrifuges, incubators, autoclaves, and other lab instruments; perform routine preventive maintenance and calibration checks, document service logs, and coordinate repairs with vendor support.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and auditable laboratory records and reports in LIMS and physical logs; enter test results, review automated QC flags, and ensure proper sign-off and secure release of diagnostic reports.
- Follow strict biosafety, biosecurity, and infection control practices including correct PPE usage, safe handling and disposal of biohazardous waste, spill response, and compliance with OSHA, CDC, and institutional policies.
- Prepare and package specimens for external shipping following IATA and institutional guidelines, ensure appropriate cold-chain and temperature monitoring, complete shipping documentation, and coordinate courier pickups.
- Assist with necropsy support and gross sample collection by taking and labeling tissue samples for histopathology, ensuring proper fixation in formalin, and preparing detailed submission forms for pathologist review.
- Participate in histology sample processing when required, including tissue trimming, embedding, microtomy, and slide labeling, or coordinate with histology specialists to prepare samples for staining and interpretation.
- Assist clinicians and pathologists during procedures by collecting and labeling specimens, documenting procedural notes, and ensuring specimens meet diagnostic quality standards.
- Implement and participate in quality assurance and quality control programs; run internal and external QC samples, monitor QC trends, document deviations, and assist in corrective and preventive action (CAPA) plans.
- Track inventory of reagents, consumables, and PPE; perform stock rotation, monitor expiration dates, place purchase orders, and maintain relationships with vendors to avoid supply interruptions.
- Provide client-facing support by answering phone and email inquiries about specimen submission requirements, turnaround times, and preliminary result information while maintaining confidentiality and professional communication.
- Train and mentor junior laboratory staff, veterinary assistants, and student interns on specimen handling, laboratory workflows, safety procedures, and proper use of laboratory software and instruments.
- Ensure documentation and reporting of instrument failures, sample discrepancies, and non-conformances; escalate issues to lab management and assist with root cause investigations and documentation.
- Support method validations and new test implementations by following validation protocols, documenting performance characteristics, and helping update standard operating procedures (SOPs) and training materials.
- Collaborate with research teams and veterinarians on study-specific sample collection schedules, data logging, and sample processing protocols to ensure compliance with study requirements and timelines.
Secondary Functions
- Participate in interdisciplinary lab meetings to share feedback on workflows, turnaround times, and process improvements.
- Cross-train in multiple laboratory sections (hematology, chemistry, microbiology, histology) to provide coverage and flexibility during peak workloads or staff absences.
- Assist with billing and test coding accuracy in collaboration with administrative staff to ensure proper client invoicing and insurance documentation.
- Support regulatory inspections and audits by preparing documentation, providing records, and explaining routine workflows to auditors.
- Help maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory environment by performing routine cleaning tasks and ensuring compliance with decontamination schedules.
- Lead or participate in continuous education initiatives and training programs to remain current with veterinary diagnostics and laboratory best practices.
