Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform routine and advanced veterinary laboratory testing including automated and manual hematology (CBC, blood smears), clinical chemistry panels, urinalysis (dipstick, microscopy, specific gravity), cytology slide preparation and interpretation, parasitology exams, microbiology cultures and sensitivity testing, immunoassays (ELISA), and molecular diagnostics such as PCR and qPCR to detect pathogens in animal specimens.
  • Accession, label, prioritize, and triage incoming specimens according to laboratory SOPs and client instructions, ensuring chain-of-custody, accurate patient identifiers, and specimen integrity for veterinary diagnostics.
  • Operate, calibrate, troubleshoot, and perform routine maintenance on laboratory instrumentation (hematology analyzers, chemistry analyzers, urinalysis readers, centrifuges, PCR thermocyclers, microscopes, incubators) and document maintenance and calibration activities in equipment logs and LIMS.
  • Prepare reagents, controls, and calibration materials; perform and document quality control (QC) procedures daily and interpret QC results to maintain analytical accuracy and precision for veterinary diagnostic assays.
  • Evaluate and prepare cytology specimens (staining, mounting, slide review), generate preliminary interpretations, and submit images/reports to veterinarians or clinical pathologists for final diagnosis in a timely manner.
  • Perform microbial culture workups, including specimen inoculation, colony identification, basic biochemical testing, and coordinate antimicrobial susceptibility testing and reporting for bacterial isolates from animal samples.
  • Run and interpret molecular diagnostic assays (PCR, qPCR) and immunoassays (ELISA, rapid tests), ensuring contamination control, appropriate controls, and accurate result reporting for infectious disease surveillance and patient care.
  • Maintain accurate, legible, and timely documentation of test results, QC data, instrument logs, and chain-of-custody in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and paper records as required.
  • Review and release routine and critical laboratory results according to laboratory protocols, escalate unexpected or clinically significant findings promptly to supervising veterinarians or laboratory leadership.
  • Implement and follow biosafety, biosecurity, and hazardous waste handling procedures, including use of personal protective equipment (PPE), decontamination, sharps disposal, and shipping of diagnostic specimens in compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Coordinate and prepare specimens for external reference laboratories or regulatory testing, including appropriate packaging, labeling, documentation, and cold-chain management for overnight shipment.
  • Manage inventory of laboratory supplies, reagents, and diagnostic kits; place orders, track expiration dates, and ensure appropriate storage conditions for temperature-sensitive materials.
  • Assist with method validation, verification, and change control for new assays or instrumentation, including performing parallel testing, establishing performance characteristics, and documenting validation evidence.
  • Participate in proficiency testing, inter-laboratory comparisons, and corrective action planning to maintain accreditation/quality standards and continuously improve diagnostic performance.
  • Provide training, supervision, and competency assessment for junior technicians, veterinary assistants, students, or rotating staff on laboratory procedures, safety practices, and equipment operation.
  • Assist veterinary clinicians and researchers by collecting, labeling, and processing diagnostic and research samples including blood draws, swabs, tissue biopsies, and post-mortem tissues when trained and authorized to perform sample collection.
  • Maintain and sanitize laboratory workspaces, biosafety cabinets, glassware, and tools; ensure environmental monitoring and adherence to sterile/aseptic technique where required for culture and molecular workflows.
  • Generate and deliver clear, professional laboratory reports, images, or consultative summaries for veterinarians, including documentation of methods, limitations, and recommendations for follow-up testing.
  • Participate in on-call rotations or emergency testing workflows (as applicable) to support critical clinical cases and after-hours diagnostics, ensuring timely laboratory support for urgent animal care.
  • Assist with billing codes, test pricing verification, and documentation required for client invoices or research accounting as directed by lab management.
  • Support research projects by tracking sample metadata, maintaining cold storage and sample repositories (freezers, -80°C), and coordinating sample retrievals for study use.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives by recommending workflow optimizations, waste reduction, cost savings, and automation opportunities to increase laboratory throughput and quality.
  • Ensure regulatory and institutional compliance by maintaining SOPs, attending required trainings (biosafety, chemical safety), and participating in audits and inspections as requested.
  • Develop and maintain strong client-service relationships by responding to veterinarian and client inquiries, advising on sample submission best practices, and providing technical guidance to optimize diagnostic yield.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Associate degree in Veterinary Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Laboratory Technology, Biological Sciences, or related field; OR equivalent laboratory experience with documented competencies.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Technology, Animal Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Microbiology, or molecular biology.
  • Certification or credentialing such as Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT, RVT, CVT) or certification in medical laboratory technology is a plus.
