Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform advanced soft tissue surgeries including oncologic resections, gastrointestinal surgery (enterotomy, enterectomy, anastomosis), hepatic and splenic procedures with meticulous hemostasis, aseptic technique, and documentation to minimize complications and optimize recovery.
  • Execute complex orthopedic procedures such as fracture repair (internal and external fixation), TPLO/TPLO alternatives, extracapsular repairs, corrective osteotomies, joint stabilization, arthrodesis and joint replacement under current best-practice standards.
  • Plan and carry out minimally invasive surgical procedures — laparoscopy, thoracoscopy, arthroscopy — including preoperative planning, equipment selection, and skills to reduce patient morbidity and shorten recovery times.
  • Lead perioperative anesthesia management for surgical patients: select anesthetic protocols, perform pre-anesthetic risk assessment, place and manage advanced monitoring (blood pressure, capnography, ECG, pulse oximetry), and intervene for intraoperative hemodynamic or respiratory events.
  • Provide comprehensive pain management and multimodal analgesia protocols (opioids, local/regional blocks, CRIs, NSAIDs, adjunct agents) tailored to species, procedure, and comorbidities to ensure comfort and rapid mobilization.
  • Interpret diagnostic imaging and integrate radiographs, CT, MRI, ultrasound results into surgical decision-making and intraoperative navigation; collaborate with radiology for complex cases.
  • Triage surgical emergencies and provide emergency surgical interventions (GDV, severe trauma, hemoabdomen), maintaining composure under pressure and coordinating emergency teams.
  • Create individualized surgical plans and client-informed consent materials, clearly articulating risks, prognosis, potential complications, expected recovery timelines, and cost estimates.
  • Provide preoperative and postoperative patient care including wound management, drain placement and monitoring, bandaging, rehabilitation planning, and discharge instructions to owners and staff.
  • Supervise, train, and mentor surgical residents, interns, and technician teams on aseptic technique, instrument handling, surgical assistance, and high-quality perioperative nursing care.
  • Maintain and enforce aseptic operating room protocols, instrument sterilization, and inventory control to ensure compliance with practice standards and infection control policies.
  • Conduct surgical case reviews, morbidity and mortality rounds, and continuous quality improvement initiatives to reduce complication rates and improve clinical outcomes.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary case management with internal medicine, oncology, neurology, cardiology, and rehabilitation services for complex or comorbid patients requiring collaborative care plans.
  • Select, maintain, and operate surgical equipment and technology (orthopedic saws, drills, fixation systems, endoscopes, lasers), ensuring preventive maintenance and appropriate vendor relationships for repairs and upgrades.
  • Manage surgical scheduling, prioritize cases based on medical urgency, and optimize operating room utilization to balance elective and emergency caseloads while maintaining high standards of care.
  • Participate in clinical research, case series, and publication efforts related to surgical techniques, outcomes, and new technologies to advance evidence-based practice and support academic reputation.
  • Ensure accurate and timely medical record documentation for all surgical encounters, anesthesia records, consent forms, and follow-up notes in compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Counsel clients on long-term follow-up, rehabilitation, nutritional needs, and potential lifestyle changes after major surgical procedures to maximize patient recovery and client satisfaction.
  • Adhere to workplace regulatory requirements, occupational health and safety protocols, controlled substance handling, and proper disposal of biohazard materials.
  • Lead or contribute to marketing and case promotion efforts by preparing educational content, speaking to client groups, creating case summaries and before/after patient outcomes to drive referrals and practice growth.
  • Implement evidence-based infection prevention practices, antibiotic stewardship for surgical cases, and review perioperative prophylaxis protocols to reduce postoperative infections and antimicrobial resistance.
  • Evaluate and incorporate new surgical techniques and technologies, conducting cost-benefit analyses and pilot trials to determine suitability for the practice.

Secondary Functions

  • Provide on-call support for after-hours surgical emergencies on a rotating basis, collaborating with emergency clinicians to ensure continuity of care.
  • Assist with or lead teaching sessions, lectures, and hands-on workshops for staff, interns, veterinarians, and students to elevate the surgical skills across the practice.
  • Contribute to case intake and referral triage by evaluating incoming referral requests, advising referring veterinarians, and arranging diagnostic workups prior to surgery.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent from an accredited institution

Preferred Education:

  • Completed small animal/large animal surgical internship and surgical residency OR
  • Board certification by American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) or European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS)
