Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Prepare and maintain a sterile surgical suite by performing surgical scrubs, arranging instrument sets, assembling and verifying surgical packs, ensuring functioning sterility indicators, and maintaining aseptic technique throughout procedures.
  • Assist veterinarians during soft-tissue, orthopedic, dental, and emergency surgeries by passing instruments efficiently, providing tissue retraction, controlling suction, assisting with hemostasis, and anticipating surgeon needs to maintain procedural flow.
  • Induce, monitor, and recover anesthetized patients under veterinarian direction: perform anesthetic inductions, intubation, set-up and monitor anesthesia machines, adjust gas flow and anesthetic depth, and record parameters on anesthesia logs.
  • Continuously monitor intraoperative vital signs — heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, pulse oximetry (SpO2), capnography (EtCO2), ECG — and recognize early signs of anesthetic or surgical complications, escalating to the veterinarian immediately when indicated.
  • Place and maintain IV catheters, secure lines, administer intravenous fluids, calculate and deliver medications and emergency drugs per protocols, and document all medications, dosages, routes, and times in the medical record.

  • Perform aseptic cleaning and sterilization of surgical instruments and equipment using ultrasonic cleaners, washers, and autoclaves; log sterilization cycles and manage instrument maintenance schedules to ensure reliable performance.
  • Operate and maintain surgical support equipment (anesthesia machines, suction units, electrocautery, warming devices, monitoring equipment), perform basic troubleshooting, and coordinate repairs or service when necessary.
  • Implement and enforce surgical infection control practices, including PPE usage, environmental cleaning protocols, handling of biohazardous waste, and adherence to OSHA and clinic-specific safety standards.
  • Triage and stabilize emergency surgical patients in perioperative settings: perform rapid assessment, initiate life-saving interventions (CPR, fluid resuscitation, oxygen therapy), and prepare for immediate surgical intervention.
  • Educate and counsel pet owners clearly and compassionately on pre-operative instructions, anticipated surgical risks and outcomes, discharge care plans, medication administration, wound care, and follow-up appointments.
  • Prepare and assist with specialized procedures such as dental extractions, regional anesthesia blocks, endoscopy, laparoscopy prep, and orthopedic instrument handling (plates, screws, external fixators) as directed.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
