Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Provide compassionate, hands-on restraint and handling of small and large animals during examinations, diagnostic procedures, treatments, and surgeries, ensuring patient safety and minimizing stress.
  • Prepare exam rooms, surgical suites, and treatment areas by cleaning, disinfecting, arranging instruments, restocking supplies and setting up sterile drapes and equipment according to clinic protocols.
  • Assist veterinarians and licensed veterinary technicians during physical exams, dental procedures, soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries by passing instruments, monitoring patient status, and anticipating clinical needs.
  • Monitor anesthesia and vital signs (heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature, blood pressure, oxygen saturation) under the direction of a veterinarian/technician, and document changes and administered anesthetics in the medical record.
  • Place and maintain intravenous catheters, administer prescribed medications, set up and monitor fluid therapy, and perform routine injections and vaccinations under supervision and per clinic policy.
  • Draw blood, collect urine, fecal, cytology and swab samples, label specimens accurately, and prepare samples for in-clinic laboratory testing or external laboratory submission.
  • Perform in-house diagnostic tests including blood chemistry panels, complete blood counts (CBC), urinalysis, fecal flotations, SNAP tests and other point-of-care assays, and report abnormal results to senior clinical staff.
  • Operate and position patients for digital radiography and dental imaging, process and label images, and follow radiation safety procedures including proper PPE and dosimetry tracking.
  • Conduct dental prophylaxis under supervision: scaling, polishing, charting periodontal disease, placing dental radiographs, assisting with extractions and postoperative dental care.
  • Monitor hospitalized patients’ status—record vitals, pain scores, intake/output, appetite, wound integrity, and behavior—maintain daily treatment logs and report concerns to the supervising clinician.
  • Perform wound management and basic surgical aftercare including bandage changes, staple/suture removal, wound cleaning, and application of topical medications per veterinarian instructions.
  • Maintain accurate and timely medical records in the clinic’s electronic medical record (EMR) system including treatment plans, medication administration records, lab results, and owner communications.
  • Provide client education and discharge instructions on medication administration, post-operative care, nutrition, behavior modification and chronic disease management, ensuring owners understand follow-up care and signs to watch for.
  • Triage phone and in-person emergency cases, gather relevant patient history, prioritize urgent needs and prepare the treatment area for immediate clinician evaluation.
  • Implement and maintain infection control and biosecurity measures: sterilize surgical instruments, process autoclave loads, manage sharps disposal, and ensure cleanliness of kennels and treatment areas.
  • Maintain controlled substance logs, assist with pharmacy inventory checks, prepare and label medications according to legal and clinic standards, and support accurate charge capture for client billing.
  • Assist in the restraint, handling and safe transportation of fractious or fearful animals using low-stress handling techniques and, when necessary, sedation protocols directed by clinicians.
  • Participate in team huddles, case rounds and continuing education sessions; communicate effectively with veterinarians, technicians, reception staff and managers to coordinate patient care flow.
  • Support sample tracking and communication with external diagnostic laboratories, ensure proper packaging/shipping of specimens, and follow up on pending results.
  • Manage routine kennel and hospital operations including feeding, exercising, cage cleaning, and monitoring post-operative patients to maintain comfort and recovery standards.
  • Adhere to all federal, state and local regulations regarding veterinary practice, workplace safety, animal welfare and controlled substances; assist in maintaining accreditation or compliance documentation when required.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain supply inventories by monitoring stock levels, placing orders, and verifying deliveries to ensure clinic workflow is uninterrupted.
  • Assist with scheduling follow-up appointments, lab work, and specialty referrals to ensure continuity of care.
  • Contribute to quality assurance efforts by participating in record audits, infection control checks, and equipment maintenance schedules.
  • Provide client support for billing inquiries, treatment estimates and payment processing when front-desk staff are unavailable.
  • Train and mentor new veterinary assistants and kennel personnel on clinic protocols, safe animal handling, and documentation best practices.
  • Support community outreach and preventive care initiatives such as vaccine clinics, microchipping events, and educational presentations.
  • Help maintain and troubleshoot basic clinical equipment (autoclave, anesthesia machines, oxygen cages, radiography panels) and coordinate professional servicing when needed.
  • Document and report workplace incidents, animal bites, or adverse drug events to clinic leadership and assist with follow-up procedures.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Animal restraint and low-stress handling for diverse species (canine, feline, exotic small mammals).
  • Venipuncture and phlebotomy techniques for collection of diagnostic blood samples.
  • IV catheter placement, fluid therapy setup and monitoring, and subcutaneous fluid administration.
  • Clinical anesthesia monitoring including use of anesthetic machines, oxygen delivery, endotracheal tube management, and recovery protocols.

  • Basic wound care, bandaging, suture/staple removal and postoperative monitoring.
  • Oxygen therapy and use of supportive care equipment (oxygen cages, nebulizers, fluid pumps).

Minimum Education:

  • Certified Veterinary Assistant (CVA) credential or enrollment in a credentialing program for veterinary technicians.
