Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Create, iterate, and deliver polished visual effects shots — including fluids, fire, smoke, explosions, debris, cloth and crowd-driven FX — that meet project art direction and technical performance targets while adhering to production deadlines.
- Design and execute complex procedural simulations using industry-standard tools (Houdini, Maya, or equivalent), optimizing solvers and cache workflows for render efficiency and cross-platform compatibility.
- Develop and refine photoreal look development for VFX elements, including shading, texturing, grooming, and lighting passes to integrate assets seamlessly into live-action plates or real-time scenes.
- Composite rendered layers and CG passes in Nuke (or similar compositing software) with full color management, matte extraction, roto, keying, and multi-pass compositing techniques to achieve final shot deliverables.
- Collaborate with art directors and supervisors to interpret concept art and briefs, propose creative solutions, and iterate on VFX concepts through look-dev rounds and review cycles.
- Build and maintain non-destructive, production-safe node trees and scripts for compositing and FX pipelines that allow fast iteration and versioning by the team.
- Create robust, documented Houdini (or equivalent) digital assets (HDAs) and tools that empower artists to generate consistent simulations, and integrate those assets into the studio pipeline.
- Implement high-quality rendering solutions using Arnold, Redshift, V-Ray, RenderMan, or real-time engines (Unreal/Unity), including render optimization, AOV management, and denoising strategies.
- Troubleshoot and optimize heavy simulations and renders for memory, CPU/GPU usage and shot turnaround; liaise with render wranglers to ensure efficient farm usage.
- Set up, manage, and refine particle systems, dynamics networks, crowd FX, and rigid body simulations to achieve believable motion and interaction with environment elements.
- Perform shot blocking and previs for complex FX sequences to identify technical and artistic requirements early and reduce pipeline risk.
- Integrate 3D elements and simulations into live-action plates using camera tracking, matchmoving, and plate cleanup to achieve seamless compositing results.
- Implement physically plausible lighting and shading models for VFX assets to match scene lighting and camera characteristics (lens distortion, grain, motion blur).
- Collaborate with modelers, riggers, and animators to ensure FX sims respect animation timing and character interaction constraints.
- Produce high-quality turnarounds, playblasts, and shot reviews with clear notes for rapid iteration in dailies and reviews with supervisors.
- Work with technical directors to write or refine Python, HScript, VEX or MEL scripts to automate repetitive tasks, manage shot data, and enhance throughput.
- Maintain shot and asset version control and naming consistency using studio asset management systems, Perforce, ShotGrid (Ftrack, Shotgun) or equivalent.
- Contribute to cross-department communication by providing accurate time estimates, technical notes, and risk assessments for scheduled deliverables.
- Mentor junior artists on best practices for compositing, simulation setup, and pipeline usage, while fostering a collaborative and constructive review culture.
- Participate in postmortems and pipeline retrospectives to document lessons learned, improve workflows, and propose new technical/creative tooling to improve quality or throughput.
- Ensure final elements meet broadcast, theatrical, or game engine technical specifications including color space, HDR, compression, and target platform constraints.
- Stay current with industry trends, cutting-edge techniques, and new software/tools (USD, Hydra, machine learning denoisers) and recommend adoption plans where beneficial.
Secondary Functions
- Assist in building small-scale production tools, templates, and presets to accelerate artist onboarding and shot setup for recurring FX types.
- Help coordinate and test look-dev and shot integration across departments during milestone reviews and playblast sessions.
- Maintain clean, well-documented Nuke scripts, Houdini hip files, and Maya scenes to facilitate handoff and review by supervisors and other departments.
- Support asset packaging and handoff to render and compositing teams, including publishing caches and AOV manifests per studio standards.
- Participate in technical interviews and portfolio reviews to assess candidate fit for junior and mid-level VFX roles.
- Provide ad-hoc troubleshooting for pipeline issues during crunch periods and collaborate with IT/Render Ops to resolve blocking issues.
