Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Define and communicate a clear multi-year technical vision and engineering strategy aligned to company objectives, product roadmap and market opportunities; translate that vision into measurable OKRs and quarterly priorities.
- Lead, coach and scale distributed engineering teams — recruit top talent, build leadership bench strength, implement competency frameworks, and own performance management and career development for engineering leaders and ICs.
- Own the end-to-end technology roadmap, making trade-offs between velocity, quality, security and technical debt; prioritize investments that maximize customer impact and long-term platform health.
- Architect and evolve the platform for scale and resilience by driving decisions on microservices, serverless, cloud-native, containerization (Kubernetes), and infrastructure-as-code patterns (Terraform, CloudFormation).
- Drive predictable, high-quality software delivery by implementing robust CI/CD, release engineering, trunk-based development, automated testing and deployment pipelines.
- Partner with Product, Design and Business leaders to ensure timely delivery of customer-centric features, align on go-to-market priorities, and balance roadmap commitments with technical constraints.
- Establish and monitor engineering KPIs and SLAs (uptime, MTTR, lead time for changes, cycle time, deployment frequency) to improve operational excellence and executive visibility.
- Set policies, governance and architecture standards to ensure maintainability, observability (Prometheus/Grafana, logging, tracing), data integrity and system security across the engineering organization.
- Take ownership of reliability and incident management practices: define SRE principles, runbooks, post-mortem processes and continuous improvement to minimize customer impact.
- Manage engineering budget and resource planning, including headcount forecasting, vendor contracts, cloud cost optimization and capital vs. operational spend trade-offs.
- Champion product security, privacy and compliance efforts (SOC 2, ISO 27001, GDPR) in collaboration with Security and Legal teams, driving secure-by-design development practices.
- Reduce technical debt by instituting refactoring programs, architectural reviews and modernization initiatives while preserving delivery cadence.
- Drive cross-functional alignment and communication across executive leadership, Board members and key external stakeholders with clear status, risks, mitigation plans and technology rationale.
- Evaluate and adopt relevant third-party services, open-source projects, and tooling to accelerate delivery while managing vendor relationships and SLAs.
- Lead major technical initiatives such as cloud migration, multi-region deployments, performance optimization and platform consolidation with clear milestones and success metrics.
- Design and implement a scalable engineering operating model (team topologies, squad/tribe models) that enables autonomy, accountability and rapid iteration.
- Establish a strong engineering culture focused on ownership, continuous learning, diversity and inclusion, psychological safety, and measurable improvement.
- Mentor senior engineers and engineering managers to raise technical bar, architectural thinking and leadership maturity across the organization.
- Conduct architecture reviews, risk assessments and technical due diligence for M&A, strategic partnerships, and new product lines.
- Drive cost-effective scaling of systems and infrastructure — capacity planning, autoscaling strategies and disaster recovery planning to meet availability targets and business SLAs.
- Define metrics and processes to improve developer productivity, onboarding, knowledge sharing and tooling across internal platforms.
- Represent the engineering organization externally — recruit at conferences, present technical vision to customers and investors, and build employer brand in the market.
Secondary Functions
- Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis.
- Contribute to the organization's data strategy and roadmap.
- Collaborate with business units to translate data needs into engineering requirements.
- Participate in sprint planning and agile ceremonies within the data engineering team.
- Provide mentorship to cross-functional teams on best practices for data architecture, governance and consumption.
- Assist with vendor selection and management for analytics and data platform tooling.
- Act as an escalation point for complex delivery risks, cross-team dependencies and customer-impacting incidents.
