Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Conceptualize, design, and create high-fidelity 3D assets, including characters, creatures, props, vehicles, and complex environmental set pieces, from initial concept to final in-game implementation.
- Sculpt highly detailed, organic, and hard-surface models using digital sculpting software like ZBrush, ensuring strong anatomical and structural integrity.
- Build clean, efficient, and game-ready low-polygon models that adhere to strict technical budgets while retaining the essential detail and silhouette of the high-poly source.
- Author and apply advanced, physically-based (PBR) materials and textures using Substance Painter and Designer, achieving a realistic or stylized look that aligns with the project's art direction.
- Integrate, test, and troubleshoot art assets within the game engine (e.g., Unreal Engine 5, Unity), setting up materials, shaders, and lighting to ensure they appear as intended.
- Collaborate intimately with the Art Director and Lead Artists to ensure all assets maintain a consistent style, quality, and visual narrative across the entire project.
- Work alongside level designers to populate game environments, focusing on strong composition, environmental storytelling, and creating visually compelling gameplay spaces.
- Develop modular asset kits that enable efficient and varied world-building, allowing for the rapid construction of large-scale, non-repetitive environments.
- Optimize all assets, including geometry, UV layouts, and texture maps, to maximize visual quality while meeting performance targets for framerate and memory on target platforms.
- Rig and skin characters and props as needed, working with animators to ensure assets deform correctly and meet all animation and gameplay requirements.
- Participate actively in art reviews, providing and receiving constructive, professional feedback to elevate the team's collective artistic output.
- Translate 2D concept art and design briefs into fully realized 3D models, capturing the spirit and functional requirements of the original designs.
- Troubleshoot and solve complex visual and technical problems as they arise, from correcting shader errors to resolving asset pipeline issues.
- Stay at the forefront of industry trends, tools, and techniques in real-time graphics and art production to continually push the boundaries of visual excellence.
- Create and maintain thorough documentation for art pipelines, tools, and best practices to support team alignment and efficient onboarding of new members.
- Assist in prototyping new visual ideas and gameplay features by quickly creating block-out and placeholder assets during pre-production.
- Collaborate with the technical art team to refine shaders, develop new tools, and improve workflows, enhancing artistic capabilities and production efficiency.
- Manage asset files and source control (e.g., Perforce, Git), ensuring the art repository remains organized, up-to-date, and stable.
- Mentor junior artists by providing clear guidance, sharing knowledge, and fostering a supportive and collaborative team environment.
- Create stunning marketing and promotional materials, including high-resolution renders, in-game screenshots, and portfolio-quality still lifes of your work.
Secondary Functions
- Participate in regular playtesting sessions to provide critical feedback on the visual experience, asset integration, and overall gameplay feel.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of the project's art style guide and visual target documentation.
- Assist in the review and integration of assets created by external partners or outsourcing studios, providing clear and actionable feedback.
- Support the design team by creating simple "grey-box" or proxy assets for early-stage level design and gameplay prototyping.
