Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conceptualize, develop, and document the game's overarching story, including main plot points, narrative arcs, and major story beats in collaboration with the Narrative Director and Lead Designer.
  • Write clear, compelling, and tonally-consistent in-game scripts, including cinematic sequences, branching dialogue, character conversations, and incidental NPC chatter.
  • Create rich and compelling character arcs, detailed backstories, and distinct personality profiles that drive the narrative and resonate emotionally with players.
  • Develop and maintain all core narrative documentation, including the story bible, character biographies, world lore guides, and detailed plot outlines for team-wide reference.
  • Design and implement branching narrative structures that provide players with meaningful choices and consequences, ensuring all paths are coherent and satisfying.
  • Author all in-game text, including mission objectives, item descriptions, user interface text, tutorials, and loading screen tips, ensuring a consistent voice and style.

  • Pitch new story ideas, character concepts, and questlines to the creative leadership team, effectively articulating their value and potential impact on the player experience.
  • Collaborate directly with Quest Designers and Level Designers to integrate narrative elements seamlessly into gameplay, ensuring story and interaction are mutually reinforcing.
  • Refine and iterate on all written content based on feedback from team members, editorial reviews, and insights gathered from playtesting sessions.
  • Participate in and provide script materials for voice-over recording sessions, offering directional context to actors to ensure authentic and powerful performances.
  • Script and structure non-linear story elements, ensuring the player's journey feels personal and unique while maintaining narrative cohesion across the experience.
  • Write and edit marketing and promotional materials, such as game trailers, story synopses, and blog posts, in partnership with the marketing team.
  • Ensure that all written content is localized-friendly, minimizing idioms and cultural references that are difficult to translate, and support the localization team as a subject matter expert.

Secondary Functions

  • Participate in regular playtesting sessions to evaluate the real-time pacing, emotional impact, and clarity of the narrative as experienced by the player.
  • Act as a guardian of the game's lore and continuity, reviewing content from other departments to ensure it aligns with the established narrative universe.
  • Mentor junior writing staff, providing constructive feedback, guidance, and support to help them develop their craft and contribute effectively.
  • Research historical events, cultural phenomena, scientific concepts, or other subject matter to ensure authenticity and add depth to the game's world and story.
  • Assist in the casting process for voice actors, providing character briefs and script samples to help find the perfect talent for each role.
  • Collaborate with the audio and sound design teams to integrate ambient storytelling and ensure soundscapes enhance the narrative mood and tone.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of the studio's narrative tools and writing pipeline, providing user feedback to the programming team.

  • Expert-Level Writing & Editing: Mastery of grammar, syntax, spelling, and the ability to write in various tones, styles, and formats (dialogue, prose, micro-copy).

  • Involvement in the full game development lifecycle, from concept and pre-production through to post-launch support.
