As a Video Game Tester (also known as a QA Tester), you are the first line of defense against bugs, glitches, and design issues that could impact the player experience. You will be embedded within our development process, working closely with designers, programmers, and artists to identify, document, and help resolve defects. Your primary mission is to systematically break the game to make it stronger, ensuring it meets the highest standards of quality, functionality, and performance before it reaches our community. Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Meticulously execute detailed test plans, checklists, and test cases to verify the functionality, stability, and performance of game builds on various platforms (PC, Console, Mobile).
  • Proactively identify, isolate, and document defects, glitches, and gameplay inconsistencies with exceptional detail in bug-tracking software like Jira or DevTrack.
  • Author clear, concise, and comprehensive bug reports, including detailed reproduction steps, screenshots, and video captures to help developers quickly resolve issues.
  • Perform thorough regression testing on resolved defects to ensure fixes are effective and have not introduced new problems into the existing codebase.
  • Conduct regular smoke tests on new game builds to verify core stability and ensure the build is viable for further, more in-depth testing.
  • Engage in exploratory and ad-hoc testing, leveraging your game knowledge to uncover unique or edge-case bugs that scripted tests might miss.
  • Verify that the game complies with all first-party certification requirements for platforms such as Sony (TRC), Microsoft (XR), and Nintendo (Lotcheck).
  • Assess and report on game performance, including frame rates, load times, and memory usage, using profiling and analysis tools.
  • Test and provide feedback on all aspects of the user experience (UX) and user interface (UI), from menu navigation to in-game heads-up displays.
  • Validate the implementation of game features, mechanics, and systems against design documents to ensure they function as intended.
  • Perform extensive compatibility testing across a wide range of hardware configurations, software versions, and peripherals.
  • Verify in-game text, localization, and internationalization to ensure linguistic accuracy and proper formatting for all supported regions.
  • Test the integrity of monetization systems, including in-game stores, virtual currency transactions, and DLC purchases.
  • Execute network and multiplayer testing to identify latency, synchronization, and connectivity issues in an online environment.
  • Follow specific instructions to reproduce complex bugs reported by the development team or the player community.

Secondary Functions

  • Provide constructive and subjective written feedback to the design team regarding gameplay, balance, "fun factor," and overall player experience.
  • Collaborate directly with programmers, artists, and designers to communicate issues and understand the intended functionality of game features.
  • Assist Senior Testers and QA Leads in the creation, maintenance, and improvement of test cases and formal test plans.
  • Help maintain the QA department's hardware inventory, including consoles, PCs, and mobile devices, ensuring all are updated and ready for testing.
  • Participate in team playtest sessions and contribute to discussions aimed at refining core gameplay loops and features.
  • Support the Build and Release team by verifying build integrity and reporting any issues related to the build deployment process.
  • Contribute to the ongoing improvement of QA processes and methodologies by suggesting more efficient testing strategies.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Bug Tracking Software: Proficiency in using industry-standard bug tracking databases such as Jira, Azure DevOps (ADO), DevTrack, or Mantis.
  • Test Case Management: Experience with test management tools like TestRail, Zephyr, or Xray for executing test suites and tracking coverage.
  • Platform Expertise: Deep knowledge of various gaming platforms, including PC (Windows), PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One/Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android.
  • QA Methodologies: Solid understanding of the software development lifecycle (SDLC), agile methodologies, and different testing types (Functional, Regression, Smoke, Sanity, Usability).
  • PC Hardware Knowledge: Strong familiarity with PC hardware components (CPU, GPU, RAM) and the ability to troubleshoot basic software and driver-related issues.
  • Spreadsheet Software: Competency with Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets for data entry, checklist management, and basic data organization.
  • Version Control Systems: Basic familiarity with concepts of version control and experience checking out builds from systems like Perforce or Git is a plus.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Certification in Software Quality Assurance (e.g., ISTQB).

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0-3 years of professional experience in a video game or software quality assurance role.

Preferred: 1+ years of experience working as a dedicated QA Tester within a game development studio. Verifiable experience as a formal beta tester for multiple published titles is highly regarded. A diverse gaming vocabulary and experience across multiple genres are major assets.
