Core Responsibilities

  • Perform precise dormant and pre-season pruning of grapevines according to specific varietal and block requirements to influence yield and grape quality.
  • Execute canopy management tasks including shoot thinning, suckering, leaf pulling, and positioning to optimize sun exposure and air circulation.
  • Expertly tie and train young vines and mature canes to the trellis system to establish a strong structure and support fruit development.
  • Operate and maintain various types of farm machinery, including tractors, mowers, cultivators, and sprayers for tasks such as tilling, mowing, and applying treatments.
  • Participate in the hand-harvesting of grapes during peak season, ensuring careful handling of fruit to maintain quality from the vine to the winery.
  • Assist in the installation, maintenance, and repair of vineyard irrigation systems to ensure vines receive appropriate water throughout the growing season.
  • Implement weed control strategies, utilizing both mechanical methods (hoeing, cultivating) and a licensed applicator for targeted spraying.
  • Monitor vineyards for signs of pests, diseases, and nutrient deficiencies, and report findings to the Vineyard Manager for timely intervention.
  • Install, repair, and maintain vineyard infrastructure, including trellis systems, wires, posts, and end assemblies.
  • Assist with planting new vineyard blocks, which includes ground preparation, laying out rows, and planting young vines.
  • Apply compost, fertilizers, and other soil amendments as directed to maintain soil health and vine nutrition.
  • Participate in frost protection measures during critical spring months, which may involve operating wind machines or irrigation systems during early morning hours.
  • Install and remove bird netting prior to and after harvest to protect the grape crop from damage.
  • Perform cluster thinning (green harvesting) to manage crop load and ensure grapes reach optimal ripeness and concentration.
  • Safely and responsibly handle and apply vineyard chemicals, including pesticides and fungicides, in compliance with all safety regulations and company policies.
  • Operate ATVs and other utility vehicles to move between vineyard blocks and transport tools and supplies.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of all farm equipment, tools, and storage facilities.
  • Keep accurate and detailed records of daily activities, including hours worked, blocks covered, and materials used.
  • Collect grape samples from various vineyard blocks for laboratory analysis to track maturity and determine optimal harvest timing.
  • Support cellar and crush pad operations during the busy harvest season as needed, assisting with grape sorting and processing.
  • Contribute to general property maintenance tasks, such as fence repair, road upkeep, and erosion control.
  • Adhere to and promote all company safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe working environment for the entire team.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Viticultural Practices: Foundational knowledge of the grape growing cycle, including pruning, canopy management, and harvesting techniques.
  • Tractor & Machinery Operation: Experience safely operating agricultural tractors and various implements like mowers, sprayers, and cultivators.
  • Irrigation Management: Ability to install, troubleshoot, and repair drip irrigation systems.
  • Pest & Disease Identification: Basic ability to recognize common vineyard pests, mildews, and other diseases.
  • Trellis System Maintenance: Skills in repairing and installing vineyard posts, wires, and related hardware.
  • Hand Tool Proficiency: Competent use of vineyard hand tools such as pruning shears, loppers, and tying equipment.
  • Safe Chemical Handling: Understanding of safety protocols for mixing and applying agricultural chemicals (applicator license is a major plus).

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED is preferred. Relevant work experience can substitute for formal education.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate or Associate's Degree in Viticulture, Horticulture, or a related agricultural field.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0-3 years

Preferred:
