Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive virtual investigations of first-party property claims, including but not limited to damages from water, fire, wind, hail, and theft.
  • Leverage customer-provided photos, videos, and live-streaming sessions to accurately assess the scope of damage to structures and personal property.
  • Analyze and interpret insurance policy language, endorsements, and forms to make precise coverage determinations for each reported loss.
  • Develop and write detailed, line-item damage estimates using industry-leading software such as Xactimate or Symbility.
  • Proactively communicate with policyholders, providing clear explanations of coverage, the claims process, and settlement details to ensure a transparent and positive customer experience.
  • Negotiate fair and timely settlements with policyholders, contractors, public adjusters, and legal representatives in accordance with policy provisions and jurisdictional regulations.
  • Document all claim-related activities, communications, and decisions with a high degree of accuracy and detail in the electronic claims management system.
  • Establish and maintain accurate claim reserves throughout the life of the claim and authorize payments within your designated authority level.
  • Review and analyze various reports and documentation, including contractor estimates, engineering reports, and receipts, to validate the loss and ensure accurate payment.
  • Manage a pending caseload of claims, prioritizing tasks effectively to meet and exceed key performance indicators for cycle time, customer satisfaction, and loss adjustment expense.
  • Identify and promptly refer claims with potential for subrogation, salvage, or special investigation (SIU) to the appropriate internal departments.
  • Adhere to all company best practices, claims handling guidelines, and state-specific fair claims practices regulations.
  • Maintain a high level of technical proficiency in building materials, construction techniques, and current repair costs.
  • Provide exceptional, empathetic service to insureds who have experienced a loss, serving as their trusted advisor throughout the process.
  • Resolve customer concerns and complaints efficiently, de-escalating tense situations with professionalism and tact.

Secondary Functions

  • Participate in catastrophe (CAT) response efforts, which may require handling a high volume of claims and working extended hours during peak events.
  • Collaborate with field adjusters, engineers, and other experts on complex claims that may require a hybrid virtual/physical inspection approach.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of virtual adjusting workflows, tools, and best practices by providing feedback and suggestions.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to less experienced adjusters or claims support staff as requested by management.
  • Stay current on changes in insurance regulations, case law, and industry trends that impact property claims handling.
  • Assist in testing new claims technologies and software platforms before company-wide implementation.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency in Estimating Software: Advanced skill in Xactimate (X1) or Symbility is essential for writing accurate and detailed damage estimates.
  • Insurance Policy Expertise: Deep understanding of homeowners (HO-3, HO-5) and commercial property policy forms, endorsements, and coverage application.
  • Construction Knowledge: Solid working knowledge of residential and light commercial construction, including materials, building codes, and repair methods.
  • State Licensing: Must hold an active Property & Casualty (P&C) or All-Lines Adjuster license in your home state and be willing and able to obtain reciprocal licenses as required.
  • Claims Management Systems: Experience navigating and documenting claims within Guidewire, ClaimCenter, or other similar enterprise claims platforms.
  • Tech Savviness: High comfort level using video-collaboration tools (e.g., Zoom, FaceTime), mobile apps, and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).

Preferred Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 3-5+ years of direct experience handling first-party property claims is required. A combination of field and desk/inside adjusting experience is highly valued.

Preferred:

  • 5+ years of property claims adjusting experience with a carrier.
  • Prior experience in a virtual or remote desk adjusting role.
  • Professional designations such as AIC (Associate in Claims) or CPCU (Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter).
