Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Design, create, and implement high-quality, photorealistic visual effects, including particle systems, fluid simulations, fire, smoke, explosions, and magical elements, ensuring they integrate seamlessly with live-action footage or CG environments.
  • Composite multi-pass 2D and 3D elements, live-action footage, and digital mattes to create cohesive, believable, and aesthetically pleasing final shots.
  • Develop the look and feel of effects, working closely with VFX Supervisors and Art Directors to establish a visual style that aligns with the project's creative vision.
  • Execute complex shot-specific technical tasks, including 3D camera tracking, rotoscoping, and chroma-keying, to prepare plates for the integration of digital elements.
  • Create and manipulate digital assets, including textures, shaders, and materials, to achieve photorealistic or stylized appearances for objects and effects.
  • Set up and manage the lighting of CG elements and scenes to match live-action plates, ensuring proper integration, realistic shadows, and reflections.
  • Troubleshoot and solve complex creative and technical issues that arise during shot production, often requiring innovative solutions under tight deadlines.
  • Optimize scenes, assets, and effects for efficient rendering, managing computational resources to meet project timelines and stay within budget.

  • Prepare and present work for daily reviews, articulating the creative and technical choices made and being receptive to feedback and direction.
  • Perform detailed quality control on final shots to identify and fix any technical or artistic errors before they are delivered to the client.
  • Generate pre-composites or temporary composites for review by other departments to facilitate a smoother workflow and earlier feedback.
  • Assist in the development of procedural workflows and custom tools, often using scripting, to increase efficiency and creative possibilities.
  • Interpret and execute complex creative briefs from directors and supervisors, translating abstract ideas into tangible, on-screen visuals.
  • Manage rendering queues and priorities to ensure that render farm resources are used effectively and that deadlines for shot delivery are met.
  • Create or assist with the creation of post-vis (post-visualization) to help directors and editors finalize a scene's timing and composition.
  • Mentor junior artists by providing guidance, sharing knowledge, and offering constructive feedback on their work.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Expert-level proficiency in core VFX software such as SideFX Houdini for effects, Foundry Nuke for compositing, and Autodesk Maya for 3D tasks.
  • A strong understanding of 3D computer graphics principles, including modeling, texturing, lighting, shading, and rendering.
  • Experience with a variety of industry-standard render engines like Mantra, Arnold, V-Ray, or Redshift, and a deep knowledge of their material and light setups.
  • Scripting abilities, particularly in Python and/or VEX, to create custom tools, automate repetitive tasks, and extend software functionality.
  • A thorough comprehension of the entire visual effects pipeline, from asset creation and shot-prep to final compositing.
  • Strong knowledge of real-world physics, timing, and scale to create believable simulations and dynamic effects.
  • Experience with 2D paint, rotoscoping, and tracking techniques and software.
  • Familiarity with game engines like Unreal Engine or Unity, especially for real-time VFX.
