Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Perform high-quality, detailed rotoscoping and articulate matte generation to isolate elements in live-action plates for compositing.
- Execute clean-up and paint-out tasks, including wire removal, rig removal, crew/equipment elimination, and plate restoration.
- Assist compositors by preparing shots, integrating basic elements, and performing fundamental keying tasks for green screen and blue screen footage.
ar- Perform precise 2D and 3D camera tracking (matchmoving) to ensure seamless integration of computer-generated elements into live-action footage. - Support the compositing team by managing plate ingests, generating pre-comps, and setting up initial shot files according to studio standards.
- Assist in creating, texturing, and integrating simple 3D assets, particles, and effects under the direct supervision of senior artists and leads.
- Perform de-graining and re-graining of plates and rendered elements to ensure a consistent and photorealistic look.
- Handle element and plate preparation, including color correction, grading, and formatting to match the required color space and resolution for artists.
- Conduct quality control (QC) checks on your own work and the work of others to identify technical flaws, artifacts, or continuity errors before they advance in the pipeline.
- Submit, monitor, and manage rendering tasks on the studio's render farm, proactively troubleshooting and flagging any job failures or discrepancies.
- Generate and prepare mattes for the compositing team through various techniques, including procedural, luminance, and channel-based extractions.
- Assist with basic lighting and rendering setups for assets or simple scenes as required by the Lighting or CG departments.
Secondary Functions
- Meticulously organize, track, and manage digital assets, shot data, and versioning within the studio's pipeline and asset management system (e.g., ShotGrid).
- Participate actively in daily reviews (dailies) and team meetings, taking detailed notes on feedback and departmental directives.
- Assist with the ingestion and output (I/O) of data, ensuring correct handling of client plates, deliveries, and internal media transfers.
- Collaborate with the Production team to understand shot priorities, deadlines, and the overall schedule, ensuring your work aligns with project milestones.
- Learn and quickly adapt to proprietary studio tools, scripts, and workflows, demonstrating a capacity for rapid technical growth.
- Research, gather, and organize reference materials (images, videos) for sequences and effects as directed by supervisors and leads to guide artistic development.
- Provide general technical and artistic assistance to senior artists, helping to free them up for more complex and challenging tasks.
- Create and manage the generation of contact sheets, slates, and other necessary materials for internal reviews and client submissions.
- Communicate clearly and effectively with leads, supervisors, and production staff regarding your task progress, challenges, and estimated completion times.
- Help maintain and update shot tracking databases and documentation to ensure information is accurate and accessible to the entire team.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Core VFX Software: Demonstrable proficiency in key industry software, especially Nuke for compositing, rotoscoping, and paint.
- 3D Application Knowledge: Familiarity with a major 3D package such as Autodesk Maya, SideFX Houdini, or Blender.
- Tracking and Matchmove: Foundational knowledge of 2D/3D tracking principles and software like PFTrack, 3D Equalizer, or Syntheyes.
- VFX Pipeline Understanding: A solid grasp of the end-to-end visual effects workflow, from on-set data acquisition to final delivery.
- Artistic Fundamentals: A strong eye for detail and a solid understanding of composition, color theory, lighting, perspective, and motion.
- Scripting Aptitude: Basic knowledge of or a strong desire to learn Python scripting is a significant advantage.
- Technical Foundations: Understanding of video formats, color spaces (especially linear workflow), codecs, and file management.
- Adobe Creative Suite: Competency in Adobe Photoshop for texture painting and plate cleanup, and familiarity with After Effects is a plus.
