Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Spearhead the end-to-end architectural design and strategic implementation of highly available and scalable enterprise-level VMware vSphere environments, ensuring alignment with long-term business objectives.
  • Develop and maintain the multi-year technology roadmap for the enterprise virtualization platform, including lifecycle management, capacity forecasting, and the adoption of emerging technologies.
  • Architect, design, and lead the deployment of the Software-Defined Data Center (SDDC) using VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) or its constituent components like vSphere, NSX, and vSAN.
  • Lead the design and implementation of complex network virtualization and security solutions using VMware NSX-T, including micro-segmentation, distributed firewalls, and advanced routing.
  • Act as the primary technical authority on hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI), designing and optimizing VMware vSAN clusters for performance, resilience, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Create sophisticated automation and orchestration strategies using the VMware Aria Suite (vRealize) to streamline infrastructure provisioning, reduce manual effort, and enable self-service for application teams.
  • Design and govern the integration between on-premises VMware environments and public cloud platforms (e.g., VMware Cloud on AWS, Azure VMware Solution), crafting seamless hybrid and multi-cloud operating models.
  • Establish and enforce a comprehensive governance framework, including technical standards, design patterns, and operational best practices for the entire VMware ecosystem.
  • Serve as the highest point of technical escalation for deeply complex and persistent infrastructure issues that elude resolution by operational teams, providing expert-level root cause analysis.
  • Conduct continuous performance analysis and capacity planning across the virtual infrastructure to proactively address bottlenecks and ensure resources scale efficiently with business demand.
  • Champion innovation by leading proof-of-concept (POC) initiatives to evaluate, test, and validate new VMware products, features, and third-party integrations for potential business value.
  • Develop and maintain meticulous architectural documentation, including high-level and low-level designs, network diagrams, data flow models, and operational runbooks for knowledge transfer.
  • Collaborate closely with cybersecurity and compliance teams to embed security controls and policy enforcement directly into the infrastructure architecture, ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and guidance to senior engineers and administrators, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous learning within the team.
  • Architect and oversee the enterprise's disaster recovery and business continuity strategy, leveraging technologies like VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRM) to meet defined RTO/RPO objectives.
  • Lead large-scale and high-impact infrastructure projects, such as data center migrations, technology refreshes, and platform consolidations, ensuring minimal disruption to business operations.
  • Engage directly with executive leadership, business stakeholders, and application owners to understand their needs, articulate technical strategies, and build consensus for major infrastructure investments.
  • Architect and guide the implementation of enterprise-grade Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) solutions using VMware Horizon to deliver secure and high-performance remote application and desktop access.
  • Drive the financial optimization of the virtual infrastructure by analyzing resource consumption, identifying cost-saving opportunities, and providing data for chargeback/showback models.
  • Present technical strategies, solution designs, and business cases to senior and C-level executives, translating complex technical concepts into clear business-focused value propositions.

Secondary Functions

  • Support performance engineering teams with expert analysis and recommendations for optimizing critical application workloads running on the virtual platform.
  • Contribute to the organization's overarching cloud and infrastructure strategy, ensuring the VMware roadmap is in lockstep with broader IT goals.
  • Collaborate with application development and DevOps teams to integrate infrastructure provisioning into CI/CD pipelines and support containerization initiatives with VMware Tanzu.
  • Participate in change advisory board (CAB) meetings and architectural review boards to assess the impact of proposed changes on the infrastructure.
