Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop and implement personalized vocal training programs for students of varying ages and skill levels, focusing on achieving specific performance goals and artistic milestones.
  • Provide expert, individualized instruction on foundational vocal techniques, including breath support (diaphragmatic breathing), posture, resonance, diction, and vocal placement to ensure healthy and sustainable singing.
  • Coach singers on advanced performance elements, including musical interpretation, phrasing, emotional delivery, character development, and connecting with an audience.
  • Guide artists in repertoire selection, helping them choose pieces that showcase their strengths, expand their abilities, and are appropriate for specific auditions, roles, or projects.
  • Prepare singers for high-stakes auditions, competitions, and live performances, including developing audition books, cutting music, and running mock auditions with constructive feedback.
  • Instruct students on vocal health and stamina, providing strategies for warm-ups, cool-downs, and voice preservation to prevent injury and ensure longevity in their careers.
  • Diagnose and help correct technical vocal faults, such as strain, nasality, or breathiness, by applying a deep knowledge of vocal pedagogy and anatomy.
  • Cultivate a positive, supportive, and motivating learning environment that encourages artistic exploration, builds student confidence, and fosters a deep love for the craft.
  • Work closely with musical directors, stage directors, and producers to ensure the vocal performance aligns with the overall artistic vision of a production.
  • Assess student progress through regular evaluations, providing detailed, actionable feedback and adjusting lesson plans to address evolving needs and challenges.
  • Teach and reinforce music theory, sight-singing, and ear training skills to enhance students' overall musicianship and ability to learn new material quickly.
  • Provide in-studio coaching for recording sessions, guiding artists to deliver their best vocal take, focusing on pitch accuracy, timing, and emotional nuance for the microphone.
  • Develop and lead group workshops and masterclasses on specialized topics such as "Belting Safely," "Harmonizing," or "Stage Presence for Singers."
  • Enhance students' microphone technique for both live and studio settings, teaching proximity effect, control, and how to work with monitors and sound engineers.
  • Assist singers in developing a unique artistic identity and brand, helping them to understand their vocal niche within the music industry.
  • Integrate bodywork and movement-based practices to help singers release physical tension and develop a more integrated and expressive physical presence on stage.
  • Research and stay current on contemporary vocal styles and trends across various genres, including musical theatre, pop, R&B, and rock, to provide relevant and modern coaching.
  • Help students overcome performance anxiety and mental blocks by providing coping strategies and building a strong foundation of confidence through technical security.
  • Prepare and accompany students on piano for lessons, rehearsals, and in-lesson performances, demonstrating musical passages and providing a supportive harmonic structure.
  • Maintain a professional studio environment and manage administrative tasks, including scheduling, billing, and communication with students and parents.

Required Skills & Competencies

  • Deep knowledge of vocal anatomy, physiology, and health principles to promote safe, effective, and sustainable vocal production.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Music, Vocal Performance, Music Education, or a related field.

Preferred Education:

  • Master's Degree in Vocal Pedagogy, Vocal Performance, or a closely related discipline. Certifications in specific vocal methodologies (e.g., Somatic Voicework™, Estill Voice Training®) are highly desirable.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

Extensive experience coaching for professional auditions, stage productions, or recording sessions. A history of working with established artists is a strong plus.
