Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead comprehensive vocal coaching sessions with principal performers and ensemble members to build technique, ensure vocal health, and achieve specific character-driven vocal qualities.
  • Develop and execute detailed vocal rehearsal plans in collaboration with the Music Director and Stage Director to ensure efficient and effective use of company time.
  • Create, adapt, and notate complex vocal arrangements, harmonies, and orchestrations tailored to the specific skill sets of the cast and the stylistic needs of the production.
  • Direct and supervise all vocal recording sessions for cast albums, demos, or pre-recorded show elements, making critical decisions on takes, phrasing, and emotional delivery.
  • Conduct rigorous music and vocal auditions, providing expert evaluation of candidates' technical ability, stylistic versatility, and potential to fit within the show's vocal landscape.
  • Provide immediate, constructive feedback to performers during rehearsals, tech runs, and previews to refine intonation, diction, dynamics, and dramatic intent in real-time.
  • Design and implement personalized vocal health and stamina regimens for performers to prevent injury and maintain peak performance quality throughout a long run or demanding recording schedule.
  • Collaborate closely with the Sound Design team to ensure proper microphone technique, balance, and vocal processing that supports and enhances the live or recorded performance.
  • Act as the primary authority on vocal interpretation, ensuring that all performances are aligned with the composer's intent and the director's overarching narrative vision.
  • Prepare and distribute vocal scores, learning tracks, and other rehearsal materials to the cast and music team, ensuring all materials are accurate and accessible.
  • Lead warm-ups for the entire company before rehearsals and performances to properly prepare their voices and establish vocal focus for the session or show.
  • Work directly with understudies and swings to ensure they are fully prepared to cover principal and ensemble roles with vocal accuracy and confidence at a moment's notice.
  • Research and integrate period-specific or genre-specific vocal styles and techniques to ensure historical and stylistic authenticity within the performance.
  • Run "note calls" or brush-up rehearsals during a production's run to maintain the vocal integrity and precision of the original direction.
  • Liaise with composers and lyricists during the development of new works, providing practical feedback on the singability, range, and dramatic effectiveness of the vocal writing.

Secondary Functions

  • Mentor and develop junior vocal coaches, interns, or music assistants, fostering the next generation of musical leadership within the organization.
  • Participate in production meetings and creative team discussions, offering expert input on all matters related to the vocal and musical elements of the show.
  • Maintain a meticulously organized archive of all vocal arrangements, scores, and recordings for future reference, revivals, or licensing purposes.
  • Contribute to departmental budgeting and resource planning, advising on needs related to vocal personnel, recording studio time, and necessary equipment or software.
  • Stay abreast of the latest advancements in vocal pedagogy, performance technology, and industry trends to continually refine coaching methods and production workflows.
  • Assist the casting department in identifying and cultivating new vocal talent by attending workshops, showcases, and academic performances.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Expert-level knowledge of vocal anatomy, physiology, and pedagogy across a wide range of contemporary (CCM) and classical techniques.
  • Advanced proficiency in piano/keyboard, sufficient for playing complex scores, accompanying singers in rehearsals, and teaching parts.
  • High-level sight-reading ability and a strong command of music theory, harmony, and analysis.
  • Proficiency with industry-standard music notation software such as Sibelius or Finale for creating and editing professional scores and parts.
  • Familiarity with Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) like Logic Pro X or Pro Tools for creating learning tracks and supervising recording sessions.
  • Deep and practical knowledge of a wide variety of musical genres, including musical theatre, pop, rock, R&B, and classical.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field.

Preferred Education:

Master's Degree (M.M. or M.F.A.) in Vocal Performance, Pedagogy, Conducting, or a related discipline, or equivalent extensive professional experience.
