Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Design and develop comprehensive and compliant training and assessment strategies, ensuring they meet the requirements of relevant national training packages and regulatory frameworks.
  • Plan and contextualize engaging learning programs and session plans that cater to diverse student cohorts, including varying learning styles, cultural backgrounds, and levels of ability.
  • Deliver dynamic, hands-on training sessions in classroom, workshop, and online environments, effectively blending theoretical knowledge with practical, skills-based application.
  • Conduct fair, valid, reliable, and flexible competency-based assessments, gathering sufficient evidence of student performance against established industry standards.
  • Provide timely, constructive, and specific feedback to students on their assessment submissions and practical performance to guide their learning and skill development.
  • Develop and maintain high-quality learning resources and assessment tools, ensuring they are current, user-friendly, and aligned with unit of competency requirements.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed student records, including attendance, progress, and assessment outcomes, using the organization's Student Management System (SMS).
  • Proactively identify and support students who may be at risk, providing additional learning support, mentoring, or referrals to appropriate student support services.
  • Actively engage in the continuous improvement of training and assessment materials and practices through participation in validation and moderation sessions.
  • Ensure all training and assessment activities are conducted in a safe environment, strictly adhering to Workplace Health and Safety (WHS/OHS) legislation and organizational policies.
  • Establish and maintain strong connections with industry partners and employers to ensure training content remains relevant and aligned with current workplace needs and technological advancements.
  • Guide students in developing essential employability skills, including communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and professional conduct.
  • Manage and maintain training facilities, equipment, and resources, ensuring they are in good working order and suitable for delivering high-quality practical training.
  • Participate in internal and external audits conducted by regulatory bodies like ASQA (Australian Skills Quality Authority), ensuring all personal and program-level documentation is compliant.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of new courses and qualifications based on industry demand and feedback.
  • Provide pre-course advice and guidance to prospective students, helping them understand course requirements, content, and potential career outcomes.
  • Customize training delivery and materials to meet the specific needs of corporate clients or fee-for-service training contracts.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40116 or its successor): The mandatory qualification for training and assessing in the VET sector.
  • Demonstrated Vocational Competence: Extensive, current, and verifiable hands-on experience and/or qualifications in the specific industry being taught (e.g., commercial cookery, electrotechnology, business).
  • Curriculum and Resource Development: Ability to design and write engaging learning materials and compliant assessment tools from scratch.
  • Competency-Based Assessment: Deep understanding of the principles of assessment (validity, reliability, flexibility, fairness) and the rules of evidence.
  • Learning Management System (LMS) Proficiency: Experience using platforms like Moodle, Canvas, or similar to deliver online content and manage student activities.
  • Knowledge of VET Regulatory Frameworks: Familiarity with the standards for RTOs, training packages, and the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).
  • Student Management System (SMS) Operation: Competence in using systems like VETtrak or aXcelerate for record-keeping and reporting.
  • Online Delivery Platforms: Proficiency in using tools like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or Webex to facilitate engaging virtual classrooms.
  • Workplace Health & Safety (WHS/OH&S): Strong knowledge and application of relevant safety procedures, particularly in high-risk training environments.
  • Digital Literacy: Proficient in using the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and other relevant software for administrative and instructional purposes.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Diploma of Vocational Education and Training (or similar).
  • Diploma or Advanced Diploma level qualification in the field of vocational expertise.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3-10 years of post-qualification industry experience.
