Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Manage a caseload of learners, providing dedicated support, mentorship, and guidance from their initial induction through to the successful completion of their qualification or apprenticeship.
  • Plan, schedule, and conduct comprehensive and regular assessment activities, including direct observations in the learner's workplace, to evaluate practical competence against defined standards.
  • Carry out professional discussions, witness testimonies, and question-and-answer sessions to assess underpinning knowledge and theoretical understanding.
  • Provide clear, constructive, and motivational feedback on learner submissions and performance, outlining specific actions required to meet qualification criteria.
  • Develop, implement, and regularly review Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) for each learner, setting SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) targets for progression.
  • Ensure the validity, authenticity, currency, and sufficiency of all collected learner evidence, maintaining the integrity of the assessment process.
  • Maintain meticulous and compliant records of all learner interactions, assessments, and progress using e-portfolio systems (e.g., OneFile, Smart Assessor) and other management information systems.
  • Act as the primary liaison with employers and workplace mentors, fostering strong partnerships to ensure learners receive adequate on-the-job training and support.
  • Deliver one-to-one or group training sessions to bridge knowledge gaps, reinforce learning, and prepare learners for specific assessments.
  • Proactively identify any barriers to learning, such as additional learning needs or personal challenges, and implement appropriate support strategies or signpost to specialist services.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends, technological advancements, and changes to qualification standards within your specific vocational sector to ensure assessments remain relevant and current.
  • Actively participate in regular team standardization meetings to ensure consistency, fairness, and reliability of assessment judgments across the organization.
  • Effectively prepare apprentices for their End-Point Assessment (EPA), conducting mock assessments and providing targeted coaching to build their confidence and readiness.
  • Promote and enforce robust Health & Safety, Safeguarding, and Prevent policies and procedures with learners and employers at all times.
  • Organize and manage your own diary to ensure efficient and logical journey planning for learner visits, maximizing contact time and minimizing travel.
  • Engage in ongoing Continuous Professional Development (CPD) to maintain and enhance your own vocational competence and expertise in assessment practice.
  • Champion the principles of Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion in all interactions, ensuring a fair and supportive learning environment for every individual.
  • Review and interpret qualification specifications and assessment strategies from awarding bodies to guarantee the compliant and effective delivery of programs.
  • Support the learner recruitment process by conducting initial advice and guidance sessions, skills scans, and diagnostic assessments to ensure candidates are enrolled on the right program.
  • Motivate and inspire learners to take ownership of their professional development, encouraging them to strive for distinction and excel in their careers.

Secondary Functions

  • Contribute to the ongoing review and development of learning materials, assessment tools, and online resources to enhance the learner experience.
  • Collaborate with the Internal Quality Assurer (IQA) by preparing learner portfolios for sampling, participating in audits, and actioning feedback.
  • Support business development activities by representing the organization at careers fairs, employer events, or providing expert input during sales conversations.
  • Participate actively in team meetings, organizational training days, and wider quality improvement initiatives.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Assessor Qualification: Must hold a recognized assessor qualification, such as D32/D33, A1, or the current Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA).
  • In-Depth Vocational Competence: Demonstrable, significant, and recent hands-on experience and technical knowledge in the specific industry sector being assessed (e.g., Engineering, Digital Marketing, Health & Social Care).
  • E-Portfolio System Proficiency: Confident and skilled in using digital assessment platforms like OneFile, Smart Assessor, Bud, or similar systems for tracking learner progress and managing evidence.
  • Knowledge of Apprenticeship Standards: A thorough understanding of modern apprenticeship frameworks, including the requirements for off-the-job training, gateway, and End-Point Assessment (EPA).
  • Functional Skills Delivery: Competence in embedding and supporting learners with Functional Skills in Maths, English, and ICT, ideally holding a relevant teaching qualification.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Solid understanding of Ofsted's Education Inspection Framework (EIF) and the funding rules set by agencies like the ESFA.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • A formal qualification in the vocational area of expertise (e.g., Level 3 Diploma, HNC, or equivalent) at least one level above that being assessed.
  • Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA) or equivalent assessor award.
  • Level 2 qualifications (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics.

Preferred Education:

  • A recognized teaching/training qualification (e.g., Level 3 Award in Education and Training - AET).
  • A relevant Level 4 qualification or higher in the vocational sector.
  • A Level 4 Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) qualification.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3-5+ years of demonstrable, hands-on industry experience within the relevant vocational sector. 1-3 years of direct experience in an assessing, coaching, or training role is highly desirable.

Preferred: A proven track record of successfully managing a full caseload of learners from start to finish, with evidence of timely and high achievement rates. Experience working with the current apprenticeship standards and End-Point Assessment processes.
