Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Design and execute comprehensive, individualized lesson plans that align with each student's unique goals, abilities, and preferred musical genres.
  • Instruct students in the core principles of healthy and sustainable vocal technique, including proper breath support, posture, phonation, resonance, and articulation.
  • Teach fundamental music theory concepts, sight-singing skills (solfege/sight-reading), and ear training to build well-rounded musicianship.
  • Guide students in the exploration, selection, and interpretation of appropriate vocal repertoire spanning various styles like classical, musical theatre, pop, jazz, and R&B.
  • Provide expert coaching on performance delivery, including stage presence, emotional expression, and storytelling to build confidence for recitals, auditions, and competitions.
  • Systematically assess student progress through constructive feedback, periodic evaluations, and performance benchmarks, adjusting teaching strategies to ensure continuous growth.
  • Cultivate a positive, encouraging, and engaging learning atmosphere that fosters creativity, self-expression, and a lifelong passion for the vocal arts.
  • Diagnose and address common vocal faults, bad habits, and technical challenges, providing targeted exercises and strategies to promote vocal health and efficiency.
  • Maintain a current and evolving knowledge of vocal pedagogy, voice science, and contemporary teaching methodologies through ongoing professional development and research.
  • Prepare students for specific, high-stakes events such as college music program auditions, professional casting calls, recording sessions, and major competitions.
  • Integrate modern technology, including recording software, accompaniment applications, and online learning resources, to enrich the instructional experience.
  • Maintain clear, consistent, and professional communication with students (and parents/guardians) regarding scheduling, progress, billing, and studio policies.
  • Foster an appreciation for the historical and cultural context of the vocal repertoire, connecting students to the broader world of music.
  • Teach effective strategies for managing performance anxiety and building the mental resilience required for public performance.
  • Instruct on proper microphone technique and basic live sound principles for contemporary vocal styles.
  • Maintain meticulous and organized records of student attendance, lesson notes, progress reports, and repertoire lists.
  • Plan, coordinate, and direct student recitals, workshops, and studio classes to showcase student achievements and build a sense of community.
  • Collaborate effectively with accompanists, other music faculty, and administrative staff to support a cohesive and robust music program.
  • Adapt teaching materials and instructional approaches to effectively accommodate students with diverse learning abilities, styles, and needs.
  • Provide essential guidance on vocal health and hygiene, including hydration, nutrition, vocal rest, and strategies for avoiding injury and strain.
  • Assist advanced students in building their professional toolkit, including repertoire books, audition cuts, headshots, resumes, and demo recordings.
  • Actively participate in the recruitment and retention of students for the voice studio through community engagement, trial lessons, and promotional events.

Secondary Functions

  • Participate actively in faculty meetings, departmental planning sessions, and institutional professional development opportunities.
  • Assist in the curation, organization, and maintenance of the studio's sheet music library and teaching resources.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development and refinement of the music department's curriculum and program offerings.
  • Represent the organization at community arts events, music education conferences, and recruitment fairs to enhance program visibility.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced proficiency in vocal performance, demonstrating expertise in at least one primary genre (Classical, Musical Theatre, Commercial/Pop).
  • Expert-level knowledge of vocal anatomy, physiology, and modern vocal pedagogy.
  • Strong piano/keyboard accompaniment skills sufficient for demonstrating melodies, playing scales, and accompanying students in lessons.
  • Deep understanding of music theory, harmony, and musical analysis.
  • High proficiency in sight-singing and aural skills (ear training).
  • Extensive knowledge of vocal repertoire and its appropriate application for different voice types and skill levels.
  • Ability to accurately diagnose vocal issues and prescribe effective corrective exercises.
  • Knowledge of foreign language diction for classical singing (e.g., Italian, German, French).
  • Familiarity with music notation software (e.g., Sibelius, Finale) and digital audio workstations (DAWs) for creating learning tracks.
  • Practical understanding of microphone technique and basic audio equipment for both live performance and recording contexts.
  • Proven ability to develop structured, progressive curricula and lesson plans.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree (B.M. or B.A.) in Music.
