Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Lead the end-to-end design, engineering, programming, testing, commissioning, and optimization of warehouse automation systems including conveyors, sortation, automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS), goods-to-person systems, palletizers, robotic picking cells, AGVs and AMRs to meet business KPIs for throughput, accuracy, and uptime.
- Develop detailed PLC and control system designs (Rockwell/Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Schneider) including I/O mapping, tag naming conventions, state machines, interlocks, and safe shutdown logic to ensure reliable and maintainable automation.
- Architect and implement industrial communication networks and protocols (EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, Modbus TCP, OPC UA) and integrate PLCs, drives, HMIs, and robot controllers into a cohesive control layer.
- Program and debug industrial robots (ABB, FANUC, KUKA, Yaskawa) using vendor-specific languages and toolchains, and design cell layouts, end-of-arm tooling, and robot payload/cycle-time optimizations for pick-and-place, depalletizing, palletizing and case-handling applications.
- Integrate warehouse control systems (WCS) and warehouse management systems (WMS) with automation controls via APIs, messages, or middleware; design message flows, transaction validation, and exception handling with high reliability for real-time operations.
- Design and deploy machine vision systems (Cognex, Keyence, Matrox) for barcode reading, OCR, object detection, orientation verification, and quality checks; develop image processing recipes and calibrations.
- Specify, select, and commission material handling equipment (motors, VFDs, gearboxes, bearings, sensors, encoders) and ensure compatibility with control systems, safety requirements, and mechanical interfaces.
- Create detailed electrical schematics, panel layouts, BOMs, and documentation for manufacturing and field installation; partner with mechanical engineers to resolve layout, mounting, and routing issues.
- Execute FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing) and SAT (Site Acceptance Testing) plans; define test cases, acceptance criteria, and performance benchmarks; oversee vendor FAT and ensure compliance with contractual requirements.
- Lead on-site commissioning activities, troubleshoot complex mechanical, electrical, and software integration issues, and drive corrective actions to achieve reliable system performance under live operations.
- Implement functional safety systems (safety PLCs, light curtains, safety mats, safety relays) and ensure compliance with standards (NFPA 70E, ISO 13849, IEC 61508); perform risk assessments and create safety documentation.
- Establish and maintain preventative maintenance strategies for automation assets, produce O&M manuals, spares lists, and training materials for operations and maintenance teams to minimize downtime.
- Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders including operations, supply chain, procurement, and IT to align automation roadmaps with business objectives and site constraints; translate operational requirements into technical specifications and acceptance criteria.
- Manage vendor and integrator relationships: evaluate proposals, perform technical due diligence, negotiate technical scopes, and validate vendor deliverables to ensure on-time, on-budget delivery.
- Implement OT/ICS cybersecurity best practices and segmentation, coordinate with IT for secure remote access, patch management, and protection of control system assets.
- Monitor system performance via SCADA/HMI and telemetry data; analyze downtime, throughput, and error trends and execute continuous improvement projects (Lean Six Sigma mindset) to increase efficiency and reduce cost per unit.
- Lead change control and software revision management; maintain version control for PLC code, robot programs, HMI screens, and WMS integration scripts; document change impacts and roll-back procedures.
- Develop and execute functional and integration test scripts for automated subsystems, perform root cause analysis for failures, and implement corrective and preventive actions with measurable results.
- Mentor junior engineers, technicians, and field service staff; provide technical guidance, code reviews, and hands-on training to build internal automation capabilities.
- Manage project schedules, resource allocation, and risk mitigation for medium-to-large automation projects; coordinate multi-discipline teams and escalate issues proactively to keep milestones on track.

Minimum Education:
