Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Receive incoming shipments: verify packing lists, inspect goods for damage, compare quantities to purchase orders, and accurately record receipts in the Warehouse Management System (WMS) to maintain real-time inventory accuracy.
- Operate forklifts, pallet jacks, hand trucks, reach trucks and other material handling equipment safely and efficiently to move pallets and units between receiving, storage, and staging areas, following OSHA and company safety guidelines.
- Pick customer orders using RF scanners and pick-to-light or pick-by-voice systems; ensure correct SKU, quantity, lot, and serial number selection to achieve β₯99% order accuracy and meet daily productivity targets.
- Pack and prepare orders for shipment: select appropriate packaging materials, apply carrier labels (UPS, FedEx, LTL), create shipping manifests, and ensure packages meet carrier and regulatory requirements to minimize damage and returns.
- Stage and load outbound shipments onto trucks and trailers, using proper load securing techniques and verifying shipping documentation, carrier number, and Bill of Lading to ensure on-time departures.
- Conduct cycle counts, physical inventories, and spot checks to reconcile variances, root-cause inventory discrepancies, and update inventory records in the ERP/WMS while adhering to inventory control procedures.
- Process returns (RMA) and damaged goods: inspect returned items, document condition, process return transactions in the system, and route items to quarantine, repair, or restock following reverse logistics policies.
- Label, palletize and shrink-wrap merchandise according to store, DC or customer-specific requirements; create master and retail labels, carton markings, and GS1-compliant barcodes where required.
- Follow FIFO / LIFO / FEFO picking rules in cold storage or perishable product environments to maintain product freshness, reduce spoilage, and comply with food safety or temperature-controlled storage protocols.
- Maintain clean, organized and safe work areas by performing regular housekeeping, removing debris, and safely storing tools and materials to reduce hazards and improve operational flow.
- Use handheld RF scanners, tablets or warehouse terminals to update order status, scan receipts/issues, and troubleshoot scanning or data-entry errors to keep information current across systems.
- Accurately complete all shipping and receiving paperwork, including Bills of Lading, packing slips, damage reports, and quality inspection records; escalate discrepancies to supervisors promptly.
- Meet or exceed key performance indicators (KPIs) such as units per hour, orders per shift, pick accuracy, on-time shipments, and perfect order rate through disciplined work practices and process improvement suggestions.
- Support cross-docking operations by quickly sorting, staging and routing fast-moving freight from inbound to outbound trailers to accelerate throughput and reduce handling time.
- Participate in safety audits, daily toolbox talks, and training sessions to maintain certifications (forklift, HAZMAT, PPE use) and ensure compliance with site-specific safety and environmental policies.
- Inspect and maintain material handling equipment; perform basic preventative maintenance (battery charging, grease points, hose checks) and report equipment malfunctions or safety concerns to maintenance or supervision.
- Assist with load planning and pallet optimization to maximize trailer cube utilization and protect product integrity during transit, minimizing freight costs and damage claims.
- Support new product introductions and seasonal surge periods by learning product locations, special handling requirements, and temporary processes to sustain throughput and accuracy.
- Coordinate with shipping carriers, 3PL partners, and internal transport teams to schedule pick-ups, track in-transit freight, and resolve shipping exceptions that could impact customer delivery windows.
- Participate in continuous improvement projects (5S, Kaizen, Lean) by identifying inefficiencies, proposing corrective actions, and implementing standardized work to streamline fulfillment operations.
- Perform quality control inspections at packing and staging points, including weight verification, count checks, and visual inspections to reduce customer claims and increase first-time-right shipments.
- Adhere to hazardous materials (HAZMAT) handling procedures when applicable, including appropriate segregation, documentation, and labeling for regulated products and compliance with DOT/49 CFR rules.
- Support onboarding and on-the-job training for new hires by demonstrating standard work, safety procedures, and system usage to ensure consistent performance across the team.
- Assist inventory planning and demand forecasts by providing frontline feedback on stock levels, damaged goods trends, and slow-moving SKUs that affect replenishment and purchasing decisions.
Secondary Functions
- Support periodic audit requests and provide documentation for internal and external compliance reviews, including product traceability and lot/serial histories.
- Assist in basic data entry and updating of master data records in the WMS/ERP when instructed, ensuring accurate item descriptions, unit measures, and location assignments.
- Help implement temporary process changes during peak seasons or pilot projects and provide feedback to continuous improvement teams on practical impacts and suggestions.
- Participate in cross-functional meetings with procurement, customer service, and transportation teams to escalate operational challenges and align on corrective actions.
- Provide backup support to other warehouse functions (e.g., returns processing, staging, packing) during high-volume periods or team absences to maintain service levels.
- Contribute to the siteβs safety culture by identifying near-misses, reporting hazards, and participating in incident investigations to reduce recurrence.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Proficient with Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) and RF scanning devices; experience with systems such as Oracle WMS, Manhattan, SAP EWM, or JDA is a plus.
- Forklift and powered industrial truck operation certification (counterbalance, pallet jack, reach truck); safe operation and load-securement expertise.
- Strong knowledge of shipping and receiving processes, including Bill of Lading, pallet labels, carrier manifests, UPS/FedEx/LTL requirements, and pallet configurations.
