Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Receive inbound shipments, verify quantities and condition against packing lists and purchase orders, and accurately document discrepancies in the warehouse management system (WMS) to maintain audit-ready receiving records.
  • Perform precise put-away using assigned storage methods (bin, pallet, shelf), update location data in the WMS, and optimize slotting to support efficient picking and minimize travel time.
  • Pick customer orders using RF handheld scanners and paper pick lists, following FIFO/LIFO and specific picking instructions to achieve high order accuracy and meet daily pick quotas.
  • Pack orders to company standards including correct packaging materials, weight and dimension checks, invoice and label application, and carrier-specific preparation to reduce transit damage and returns.
  • Stage and consolidate pallets and packages for carrier pickup, verify bill of lading (BOL) details, and coordinate with carriers to ensure on-time outbound shipments.
  • Operate material handling equipment safely—electric pallet jacks, walkie stackers, and sit/stand forklifts (if certified)—to move product efficiently while maintaining a clean work environment.
  • Conduct cycle counts and full inventory audits, reconcile inventory discrepancies, investigate root causes, and propose corrective actions to improve inventory accuracy.
  • Process returns and reverse logistics by inspecting returned items, updating the RMA system, restocking salable items, and coordinating disposition for damaged or non-sellable goods.
  • Execute quality inspections during inbound and outbound workflows, identifying damaged or non-conforming products and communicating findings to quality assurance or procurement teams.
  • Maintain accurate order documentation, complete shipping manifests, and update tracking numbers in internal systems and customer-facing platforms to provide real-time status updates.
  • Load and unload trucks efficiently and safely, using proper lifting techniques and equipment, while ensuring that freight is handled according to carrier and company policies.
  • Meet productivity, accuracy, and safety KPIs (e.g., picks per hour, order accuracy rate, on-time shipments, OSHA incident rates) and proactively identify opportunities to improve metrics.
  • Use handheld scanners, tablets, and WMS software (e.g., Oracle WMS, Manhattan, SAP EWM, HighJump) to capture transaction data, pass exception flags, and resolve WMS-related issues with minimal downtime.
  • Support seasonal volume surges and peak operations by flexing to different departments (receiving, picking, packing, shipping) and training temporary staff to maintain throughput targets.
  • Follow proper labeling requirements including GS1/UPC barcodes, serial number tracking, and hazardous material labeling in compliance with applicable regulations and carrier rules.
  • Perform regular housekeeping, 5S activities, and safety checks to maintain a clean, organized, and compliant warehouse environment that reduces risk and increases efficiency.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives (Kaizen, Lean) to streamline picking routes, packing workflows, and storage layouts to reduce operational costs and lead times.
  • Communicate with supervisors, inventory control, and customer service teams to resolve order exceptions, shortages, and expedited shipment requests, ensuring excellent internal and external stakeholder service.
  • Assist with cross-docking operations—receiving freight and transferring directly to outbound trucks—while accurately documenting product flow and minimizing handling.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety policies and procedures, report hazards or incidents immediately, and participate in safety training and toolbox talks to uphold a zero-harm culture.
  • Prepare and reconcile daily paperwork, shipping logs, and KPI reports, escalating variances and recommending corrective actions to management.
  • Support onboarding and on-the-job training for new fulfillment associates by demonstrating best practices for picking, packing, WMS use, and safety protocols.

Secondary Functions

  • Lead or support regular cycle count and physical inventory events, including planning, execution, reconciliation, and follow-up corrective actions.
  • Assist in root cause analysis for recurring pick/pack/ship errors and collaborate with process improvement teams to implement corrective changes.
  • Help maintain replenishment thresholds and communicate low-stock or out-of-stock conditions to purchasing and inventory planners.
  • Participate in cross-functional projects involving customer returns, warranty processing, and vendor-directed chargebacks to preserve company margins and customer satisfaction.
  • Serve as backup for shipping clerk duties including carrier scheduling, manifest generation, and freight claim documentation when required.
  • Document and escalate damaged goods, missing parts, and supplier packaging issues to procurement and vendor management for resolution.
  • Support adoption and rollout of new WMS features, handheld devices, or packing automation by providing practical feedback and user insights.
  • Assist with basic data entry and scanning exceptions to ensure accurate system records and traceability for serialized or regulated inventory.
  • Mentor peers on ergonomics, safe lifting practices, and proper use of PPE to reduce musculoskeletal injuries and improve team wellness.
  • Engage in continuous training on compliance topics such as hazardous materials handling, food safety (if applicable), and carrier regulations.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) proficiency — experience with systems such as Oracle WMS, Manhattan, SAP EWM, HighJump, or Fishbowl.
  • RF/barcode scanning and handheld device operation for picking, receiving, and cycle counting.
  • Order picking and packing techniques, including batch picking, zone picking, and wave picking methodologies.
  • Shipping & receiving processes — manifesting, carrier labeling (UPS, FedEx, USPS, LTL), and bill of lading preparation.

  • Experience handling returns and reverse logistics workflows, including RMAs and dispositions.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED (or equivalent combination of education and relevant warehouse experience)

Preferred Education:

  • Associate degree or technical certificate in logistics, supply chain, or related field is a plus
  • Certifications such as OSHA safety, forklift operator certification, or industry-specific training preferred
