Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Operate powered industrial trucks (counterbalance forklift, reach truck, sit‑down and stand‑up forklifts) and hand equipment safely and efficiently to move raw materials, finished goods and palletized product while maintaining certified operation and daily pre‑shift inspections.
- Receive inbound freight: verify shipment contents against packing lists and purchase orders, inspect for damage, perform initial quality checks, update WMS/ERP receiving transactions, and stage product for putaway or production.
- Perform accurate putaway using warehouse slotting principles and WMS-guided locations (including high‑bay racking), ensuring correct bin/aisle assignments, lot tracking and location labeling to support traceability.
- Pick customer orders and production kitting to specified pick lists, using RF barcode scanners and WMS picking strategies (batch, wave, zone), verifying SKU/lot/quantity to achieve high order accuracy.
- Pack and prepare shipments: palletize, secure, weigh, label (including hazardous labels where applicable), generate and affix Bills of Lading (BOL), packing lists, commercial invoices and carrier paperwork, and stage for carrier pickup.
- Execute cycle counts and full physical inventories according to schedule, investigate and reconcile inventory discrepancies, adjust WMS quantities following documented procedures, and escalate systemic issues to Inventory Control leads.
- Load and unload trailers safely using dock equipment and pallet jacks, verifying carrier condition, performing seal checks, documenting damage and shortages, and coordinating expedited shipments when required.
- Maintain accurate lot, serial number and expiration date control for traceability (including FEFO/FIFO handling) in regulated environments (food, pharma, chemicals) and record temperature‑controlled product movements in compliance with cold chain procedures.
- Handle returns (RMA), quarantine nonconforming material, tag and segregate suspect product, document disposition requests (return to vendor, rework, scrap) and coordinate with Quality Assurance for disposition decisions.
- Follow and enforce OSHA, DOT and company safety policies and procedures: wear required PPE, follow lockout/tagout for equipment, complete incident near‑miss reporting, and participate in safety audits and toolbox talks.
- Operate conveyor systems, automatic sortation equipment and packaging machines as assigned; monitor operation, perform basic troubleshooting, report faults and coordinate preventive maintenance with Maintenance.
- Use warehouse technology (RF handhelds, mobile scanners, WMS, TMS, ERP such as SAP or Oracle) to capture transactions, print labels, and generate pick/ship/receiving documents with high data integrity.
- Record and report key warehouse KPIs (order accuracy, lines per hour, picks per hour, on‑time shipments, cycle count variance) and participate in performance reviews to drive continuous improvement.
- Perform quality inspections at receiving and shipping points to identify damaged or incorrect items; document nonconformances and initiate corrective actions with QA or Purchasing.
- Ensure proper segregation, labeling and handling of hazardous materials (HAZMAT) per company policy and regulatory requirements; prepare appropriate shipping documentation and training records if handling regulated shipments.
- Maintain clean, organized and safe work areas: sweep aisles, remove debris, properly store waste, and comply with 5S/lean visual management standards to reduce safety hazards and increase efficiency.
- Support seasonal and peak workload surges by flexing hours, cross‑training across functions (receiving, picking, shipping, inventory), and assisting temporary staff or staffing agencies.
- Coordinate with carriers, freight forwarders and internal logistics planners to schedule pickups and troubleshoot transit exceptions, delays, and discrepancies to maintain customer service goals.
- Train and mentor new operators on equipment operation, WMS transactions, safety practices and standard operating procedures (SOPs) to build bench strength and reduce onboarding time.
- Perform basic equipment checks and routine preventive maintenance (battery swaps, daily inspections, tire checks); report malfunctions and help prioritize repair requests to minimize downtime.
- Accurately complete and retain shipping documentation, customs paperwork and export/import documentation (when applicable) to support cross‑border shipments and regulatory compliance.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives—participate in Kaizen events, suggest process optimizations to reduce cycle time, and help implement standard work to increase throughput and reduce errors.
- Assist in staging materials for production lines, sequencing kitted parts per production schedules, and communicating shortages or excesses to Production Planners to maintain smooth manufacturing flow.
- Respond to inventory and shipment audits by internal or external stakeholders, providing documentation, access to records, and physical verification as required.
Secondary Functions
- Assist Inventory Control and Quality teams with ad‑hoc investigations, root cause analysis and corrective action execution following audit findings.
- Support cross‑functional data requests by providing transactional logs, WMS reports and manual counts to help diagnose systemic inventory issues.
- Contribute to warehouse process documentation and updates to SOPs, job aids and training materials to improve clarity and reduce onboarding time.
- Participate in shift handovers and continuous improvement meetings, offering practical feedback on process constraints and equipment needs.
- Help implement and test new warehouse systems, mobile devices and label printers under guidance from IT and Operations.
- Provide temporary coverage for adjacent roles (shipping coordinator, returns specialist) during absence or peak demand periods.
