Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Accurately pick customer and internal orders using RF barcode scanners and a Warehouse Management System (WMS), ensuring SKU, quantity, lot, and serial number conformity with order requirements.
  • Perform pick verification by scanning items and confirming correct SKUs and quantities to maintain inventory accuracy and reduce order exceptions and returns.
  • Pack and prepare orders for shipment following company packaging standards, including use of protective materials, correct labeling, and freight documentation to prevent damage in transit.
  • Stage completed orders in designated shipping areas and coordinate with shipping personnel to ensure on-time truck loading and dispatch according to daily manifests and carrier schedules.
  • Conduct inbound receiving tasks when assigned: verify incoming quantities, inspect packaging for damages, and stage product for put-away using scan and put-away procedures in the WMS.
  • Execute routine cycle counts and assist during full inventory counts, accurately recording discrepancies and working with Inventory Control to resolve variances.
  • Replenish picking locations from reserve stock, maintain shelf organization and FIFO/LIFO product rotation to minimize spoilage, obsolescence, and expired inventory.
  • Operate manual material handling equipment such as pallet jacks, hand trucks, roll cages, and, if certified, sit-down or stand-up forklifts to move product safely and efficiently.
  • Comply with all safety policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs), including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), safe lifting techniques, and adherence to OSHA and company safety guidelines.
  • Meet or exceed daily productivity and accuracy KPIs (e.g., picks per hour, order accuracy rate, on-time shipments) while maintaining attention to detail and quality.
  • Perform quality checks during picking and packing, inspecting product for damage, correct lot codes, expiration dates, and labeling requirements; tag and remove non-conforming items per procedures.
  • Execute batch, wave, zone, and piece picking strategies as directed by operations leadership to optimize throughput and minimize travel time.
  • Build and assemble multi-line orders, kitting, and bundle products as required by order specifications and sales promotions, ensuring correct components are included and labeled.
  • Complete required documentation and electronic records for damaged goods, shortages, and returns; escalate recurring issues to supervisors for root-cause analysis.
  • Assist cross-functional teams during peak seasons and special projects, including cross-docking, promotional build-ups, and onboarding of new SKUs into the system.
  • Maintain clean and organized picking aisles, shelving, and workstations; break down cardboard and packing material and place waste in appropriate recycling or disposal containers.
  • Support order correction processes by locating missing items, completing manual adjustments in the WMS when authorized, and communicating order changes to the shipping team.
  • Follow temperature- and environment-specific procedures when working in cold storage or controlled environments, including appropriate PPE, packaging and handling to maintain product integrity.
  • Use handheld scanners and mobile devices to troubleshoot and resolve pick exceptions, locate inventory using bin locations, and update inventory records in real time.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives by providing feedback on picking layouts, route optimization, and labor planning to increase efficiency and reduce picking times.
  • Train and mentor new order selectors on picking techniques, WMS usage, safety practices, and quality standards to build team capability and consistency.
  • Support returns processing and inspection: receive returned goods, verify condition against RMA or return paperwork, and route items to appropriate disposition (restock, repair, scrap).
  • Follow product-specific handling requirements for hazardous materials (HAZMAT) and regulated goods when applicable, ensuring proper labeling, segregation, and documentation.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, peers, and other departments (receiving, shipping, inventory control, customer service) to prioritize urgent orders and resolve fulfillment issues.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with light maintenance tasks for picking equipment, reporting malfunctions and requesting service for conveyors, scanners, and pallet jacks.
  • Provide input for shift handoffs and daily briefings to communicate backlog, inventory issues, and safety observations to the next shift.
  • Participate in training sessions, safety meetings, and compliance audits; assist in implementing corrective actions following audits.
  • Help implement seasonal layout changes and planogram updates to facilitate faster picking and minimize congestion during high-volume periods.
  • Support ad-hoc warehouse projects such as slotting analysis, SKU rationalization, and pilot testing of automation equipment.
  • Perform basic data entry tasks into the WMS or spreadsheets when necessary to assist inventory control or operations leadership.
  • Act as a point of contact for third-party logistics providers or temporary staff during peak times, coordinating work assignments and confirming completion.
