Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Conduct detailed site surveys and measurements at customer warehouses and distribution centers to develop accurate installation plans, ensuring layout, clearances, structural capacity, and workflow requirements are met.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, shop drawings, architectural plans, and installation manuals to install pallet racking, mezzanines, industrial shelving, and unit load systems per manufacturer specifications and project drawings.
- Assemble and install a wide range of storage systems including selective and double-deep pallet racking, drive-in/drive-through racking, cantilever racking, boltless shelving, wire decking, and supported mezzanine structures while ensuring plumbness, alignment, and correct anchoring to floor/structure.
- Install conveyor systems (roller, belt, live roller, and powered roller) including supports, chutes, and safety guarding, coordinate mechanical and basic electrical hookups with electricians when required, and test run systems to confirm operational integrity.
- Execute on-site welding, drilling, bolting, and anchoring of structural components to code and manufacturer standards, ensuring all welds and fasteners meet quality and safety inspection requirements.
- Coordinate delivery logistics, staging, and storage of materials on-site, verify inventory against bills of material, and report discrepancies or missing parts immediately to project management to prevent installation delays.
- Perform load testing, bracing, and seismic restraint installation where required, and verify that all installed systems meet structural load ratings and local code requirements.
- Use forklifts, lifts, hoists, cranes, and rigging equipment safely to position heavy components and complete installations; rig and tag loads in accordance with company and regulatory requirements.
- Complete final quality inspections and punch-lists, document deficiencies, and perform corrective actions to ensure the final installation meets contract specifications and customer satisfaction.
- Maintain daily installation logs, time sheets, safety checklists, and jobsite documentation including photos, as-built modifications, and change orders to support project billing and compliance.
- Communicate directly with customers, site supervisors, general contractors, and vendors on-site to coordinate schedules, resolve conflicts, and adapt installation sequencing to changing site conditions.
- Adhere to and enforce OSHA, ANSI, and company-specific safety policies including fall protection, PPE usage, lockout/tagout, and hazard communication on every job site.
- Train and mentor junior installers and subcontractors on installation best practices, safe work methods, quality standards, and company procedures to develop a reliable installation team.
- Interpret and execute change orders and scope modifications in the field, capturing accurate labor and material impacts and communicating required adjustments to project management.
- Troubleshoot installation and operational issues with material handling equipment (misalignment, conveyor tracking, motor starts/stops, sensor faults) and implement corrective repairs or escalate to mechanical/electrical specialists as necessary.
- Lift, transport, and position materials manually and with powered equipment while following ergonomic and safety protocols to minimize risk of injury and damage to equipment.
- Install and test dock equipment and accessories (dock levelers, bumpers, seals, vehicle restraints) and ensure safe interface between building, dock, and vehicles.
- Verify anchor locations and floor thickness, coordinate with structural engineers when unusual floor conditions or loads are present, and recommend alternate anchor solutions (epoxy anchors, chemical anchors, deck anchors) as needed.
- Maintain, calibrate, and care for hand and power tools, welding gear, hoists, and measuring instruments to ensure job readiness and precision in installations.
- Participate in pre-installation coordination meetings, provide input on sequencing, crew size estimates, and timeline feasibility during the planning phase to avoid downstream rework.
- Assist estimating and sales teams with site-based takeoffs, constructability feedback, and practical labor-hour estimates based on real-world installation experience and material handling system knowledge.
- Ensure proper disposal and cleanup of scrap materials, packaging, and waste on-site and leave completed work areas tidy and safe for customer operations.
- Complete and submit safety incident reports, near-miss logs, and corrective action follow-ups in a timely manner to support continuous safety improvement.
- Support warranty and service requests by returning to customer sites to evaluate issues, perform repairs, and document permanent fixes under warranty contracts.
