Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Receive daily pick lists from the Warehouse Management System and accurately pick products to fulfill customer orders, maintaining a picking accuracy rate consistent with company KPIs (e.g., 99%+).
- Inspect items during picking and packing to verify product condition, correct SKU, correct quantity, and expiration or lot code when applicable, preventing shipping errors and returns.
- Select and apply appropriate packaging materials (boxes, void-fill, tape, straps, protective inserts) based on product fragility, weight and carrier requirements to minimize damages in-transit.
- Execute packing procedures to meet carrier dimension and weight limits, consolidate multi-line orders, and optimize cartonization to control shipping costs.
- Weigh and dimension packages, apply accurate weight/dimensions to the WMS or shipping software, and generate carrier-compliant shipping labels (UPS, FedEx, USPS, LTL).
- Stage and palletize completed orders securely using proper stacking, shrink-wrap, strapping and labeling to ensure safe transport and ease of loading.
- Operate RF barcode scanners, handheld devices and WMS terminals for order verification, bin reconciliation and real-time inventory updates.
- Perform final order verification including invoice and packing slip preparation, ensuring the customer receives correct documentation with each shipment.
- Apply product-specific handling protocols such as hazardous materials (when trained), temperature-sensitive goods, and fragile items, following documented SOPs and regulatory requirements.
- Load packaged orders onto outbound trailers or staging areas, coordinate with carriers and the dock team, and ensure all outbound manifests and paperwork are complete.
- Conduct cycle counts and participate in inventory audits, report discrepancies to inventory control, and assist with root cause analysis for stock inaccuracies.
- Maintain production pace while meeting quality and safety standards in high-volume peak periods, demonstrating consistent throughput and reliability.
- Communicate order exceptions, shortages, damaged stock, and backorder items to supervisors and customer service to facilitate timely resolution.
- Clean and maintain packing stations, equipment and supplies; replenish packing materials to ensure uninterrupted operations and adherence to 5S standards.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives by suggesting packing process improvements, cost-saving packaging alternatives and efficiency gains.
- Follow all safety rules and use required personal protective equipment (PPE); report hazards and participate in safety meetings and incident investigations.
- Document rejected items, defective cartons and product returns, process return-to-stock or disposal per policy and update WMS records accordingly.
- Cross-train on related warehouse functions (receiving, returns processing, kitting) to provide flexible staffing support during surges and absences.
- Record production metrics such as packs per hour, accuracy rate and downtime; meet or exceed daily and weekly performance targets.
- Assist with special project packaging (promotional kits, assembly of bundle packs, custom configuration) ensuring compliance with client specifications.
- Follow standard operating procedures for labeling, serialization, lot tracing and traceability to ensure compliance with customer and regulatory traceability requirements.
- Ensure compliance with carrier requirements, including pallet patterning, hazmat documentation (if applicable), and international export packing specifications.
Secondary Functions
- Assist the inventory and operations teams with ad-hoc stock movements, replenishment and warehouse layout changes to improve picking flow.
- Support regular cycle counts and physical inventory events by pulling count sheets, staging counted SKUs, and documenting variances for reconciliation.
- Provide front-line feedback to supervisors on packaging material waste, damaged packaging supplies, and opportunities to reduce packaging costs.
- Help train new packagers on packing standards, WMS scanning procedures and safety protocols to accelerate onboarding and accuracy.
- Participate in root-cause investigations for recurring packing errors and help implement corrective action plans to prevent reoccurrence.
- Temporarily cover related functions such as unloading inbound freight, light assembly of order kits, and operating simple equipment when required.
- Maintain accurate logs of equipment issues, request maintenance for packing machinery, and follow lockout/tagout procedures during repairs.
- Support quality assurance by assisting QA staff with sampling, labeling checks and documenting non-conforming products.
