Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Supervise, coach and develop a team of packers and packing leads, setting clear daily expectations, conducting regular feedback sessions and performance reviews to ensure high engagement and sustained productivity.
  • Plan, assign and adjust daily packing workloads, shift schedules and break coverage to meet dynamic order volumes, seasonal peaks and on-time shipping targets while minimizing overtime costs.
  • Enforce packing standards and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to guarantee order accuracy, correct labeling, cartonization rules, and protective packaging for fragile items to reduce damage and returns.
  • Monitor and manage packing station productivity metrics (orders per hour, lines per hour, units per hour), analyze performance trends, and implement action plans to close productivity gaps and exceed service-level agreements (SLAs).
  • Conduct daily pre-shift briefings and post-shift debriefs to communicate priorities, safety reminders and production updates; ensure alignment with shipping cut-off times and carrier requirements.
  • Oversee quality control inspections for packed orders, perform root-cause analysis on packing errors, and implement corrective actions including retraining, process changes, or material modifications.
  • Maintain inventory and control of packaging materials (boxes, void fill, tape, labels), forecast usage, place replenishment requests, and work with procurement to optimize cost and reduce waste.
  • Coordinate with shipping, receiving and inventory teams to prioritize orders, resolve stock discrepancies, manage backorders and expedite critical shipments for time-sensitive customers.
  • Use Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), RF scanners and packing software to release, verify and close warehouse packing orders; create exception reports and escalate system issues to IT support as needed.
  • Enforce workplace safety policies and OSHA regulations, conduct regular safety audits, investigate incidents, implement preventative measures, and lead toolbox talks to promote zero-harm culture.
  • Implement Lean principles (5S, Kaizen) at packing stations to reduce motion, eliminate waste, standardize best practices and improve throughput and ergonomics for pack associates.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot packing equipment (tape machines, label printers, scales, conveyors), coordinate preventive maintenance and escalate malfunctions to facilities or maintenance teams to minimize downtime.
  • Prepare and present daily/weekly packing performance reports to operations management, highlighting KPIs, bottlenecks, corrective actions and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Lead cross-functional root-cause problem solving with quality assurance, inventory control and operations leadership to reduce packing defects, customer returns and chargebacks.
  • Manage personnel issues on the floor including attendance, shift swaps, disciplinary actions and documentation in accordance with HR policies and company procedures.
  • Participate in space planning for packing lanes and equipment layout to optimize flow, reduce travel time and accommodate changes in product mix and packaging requirements.
  • Support new product introductions and seasonal promotions by developing specific packing instructions, sample packs, and training materials to ensure consistent execution.
  • Oversee cycle counts and coordinate with inventory control to reconcile discrepancies that affect order fulfillment and packing accuracy.
  • Administer and track temporary labor and third-party packer performance during peak seasons, ensuring adequate onboarding, safety training and performance standards.
  • Drive continuous improvement projects to reduce packaging costs (right-sizing cartons, material substitution) while protecting product integrity and meeting carrier dimensional weight requirements.
  • Ensure packaging and shipping compliance with national and international regulations (hazmat, restricted items, labeling) and carrier-specific packing requirements.
  • Respond to escalated customer issues related to packing errors, damage or missing items; coordinate investigations, corrective actions and customer communication with support teams.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with receiving and put-away during peak periods or staffing shortages to maintain overall warehouse flow.
  • Support inventory audits, cycle counts and reconciliation activities as needed to preserve accuracy across fulfillment systems.
