Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Accurately pick customer orders from inventory using RF scanners or paper pick lists, verify SKU numbers and quantities, and prepare items for packing to meet order accuracy targets and minimize returns.
- Select and apply the correct packaging materials (boxes, bubble wrap, void fill, corrugate, protective film) and carton sizes based on product fragility, weight, carrier rules, and freight optimization strategies.
- Inspect product condition prior to packing; document and report damaged, defective, or missing items to Quality Assurance and initiate claims or quarantine procedures as required.
- Verify shipping labels, barcodes, and packing lists using WMS or ERP-generated documents, ensuring carrier-specific labeling, hazmat markings, and international documentation are accurate for each shipment.
- Weigh, measure, and calculate dimensional weight (DIM) for parcels and pallets; correctly classify shipments and apply postage/transport fees or billable weight in the WMS or shipping software.
- Build and secure pallets for LTL/FTL and parcel shipments using stretch wrap, banding, corner boards, and pallet patterns that meet carrier and internal load-stability standards.
- Operate material handling equipment safely (hand trucks, pallet jacks, electric pallet jacks, forklifts when certified) to move packed goods to staging areas and shipping docks.
- Stage, sort, and load outbound shipments to carrier trucks (UPS, FedEx, DHL, common carriers), verify carrier manifests, and coordinate pick-up schedules with transportation partners to meet cut-off times.
- Perform kitting and assembly operations for bundled orders, subscription boxes, promotional packs, and multi-SKU orders, ensuring correct component counts and package presentation.
- Maintain accurate cycle counts and support regular inventory audits by reconciling physical counts to WMS records, reporting discrepancies, and processing inventory adjustments.
- Use thermal label printers, print-and-apply devices, and hand-labeling tools to generate durable, scannable shipping and product labels that comply with carrier and regulatory standards.
- Follow all safety procedures and PPE requirements (OSHA standards), report near-misses and incidents, and participate in safety meetings and training to maintain a safe work environment.
- Meet and exceed daily and hourly productivity and quality KPIs, including picks per hour, pack accuracy, on-time shipments, and damage rates while balancing speed and quality.
- Perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting on packing equipment (tape machines, stretch wrappers, label printers) and coordinate repairs with Maintenance/Facilities as needed to minimize downtime.
- Assist with inbound receiving as required—unloading trucks, checking packing slips, verifying received quantities, and moving received inventory to put-away staging areas.
- Execute return merchandise authorization (RMA) handling: inspect returned goods, determine disposition (restock, repair, scrap), and update returns records in WMS/ERP.
- Prepare and maintain accurate shipping documentation for special shipments (hazardous materials, refrigerated/frozen goods, oversized cargo) and ensure applicable certifications and placards are present.
- Collaborate with Customer Service and Fulfillment teams to resolve order discrepancies, expedite rush shipments, and manage priority or overnight orders when required.
- Implement packaging cost controls by recommending alternative packing materials, right-sizing cartons, and reducing void-fill waste while preserving product protection.
- Train and mentor new packing technicians on standard operating procedures (SOPs), packing best practices, WMS usage, safety protocols, and quality checkpoints to scale team capabilities.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives (5S, Kaizen, Lean) to streamline packing workflows, reduce touch points, minimize errors, and improve throughput in the packing area.
- Maintain clean, organized workstations and packing supply inventories; replenish consumables and report low-stock items to supervisors proactively to avoid packing delays.
- Accurately complete shift reports, production logs, and exception reports in the WMS or reporting tools to provide traceability for outbound shipments and packing performance.
