Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead end-to-end warehouse projects — from requirements gathering, scope definition, and business case development through pilot execution, full rollout, and post-implementation stabilization — ensuring projects are delivered on-time, on-budget, and meet targeted KPIs.
  • Manage WMS implementations and upgrades (requirements mapping, configuration validation, integration testing, cutover planning, user acceptance testing, and go-live support) and work closely with IT and vendors to resolve defects and change requests.
  • Develop and maintain detailed project plans, workback schedules, resource allocation matrices, RACI charts, milestone trackers, and status reports for executive and operational stakeholders.
  • Design and optimize warehouse layout, racking, slotting, and zone strategies to reduce travel time, improve pick rates, increase cubic utilization, and support SKU velocity patterns using data-driven slotting models.
  • Drive inventory optimization and accuracy programs — including cycle count strategies, root cause analysis for shrink and discrepancies, reconciliation processes, and loss prevention initiatives — to improve inventory accuracy and reduce write-offs.
  • Lead process improvement initiatives using Lean, Six Sigma, Kaizen, or continuous improvement methodologies to reduce throughput time, eliminate waste, and increase labor productivity and order accuracy.
  • Coordinate cross-functional stakeholder engagement (operations, safety, procurement, finance, IT, carriers, and vendors) to align requirements, manage change impact, and secure necessary approvals and resources.
  • Prepare and manage project budgets, cost estimates, ROI analyses, CAPEX proposals for equipment and automation, and track actual vs. forecasted spend and realized benefits.
  • Implement and monitor operational KPIs and dashboards (OTIF, picks per hour, orders per shift, cycle time, accuracy, dock to stock) and translate data into actionable recommendations and corrective action plans.
  • Lead site surveys, capacity analyses, proof-of-concepts, and pilot programs for automation, robotics, conveyors, voice picking, RF/ barcode/RFID solutions and evaluate technology vendors and integrators.
  • Configure WMS and ERP parameters relevant to warehouse tasks (picking logic, replenishment policies, wave planning, putaway rules) and document configuration changes and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Manage vendor and contractor relationships for equipment procurement, installation, testing, and maintenance; negotiate statements of work and monitor vendor performance against SLAs.
  • Conduct risk assessments, safety reviews, and regulatory compliance checks (OSHA, DOT, hazardous materials handling), and incorporate safety-by-design into project plans.
  • Plan and execute cutover and go-live readiness activities including data migration, reconciliation, user training schedules, contingency plans, and hypercare support windows.
  • Facilitate training programs and change management communications for warehouse teams, supervisors, and floor champions to secure adoption and reduce operational disruption.
  • Perform detailed time and motion studies and labor models to build accurate workforce plans, shift patterns, and FTE forecasting tied to seasonal demand and new project scope.
  • Maintain and update SOPs, work instructions, training materials, and knowledge base articles to institutionalize process changes and best practices.
  • Run root cause analysis (5 Whys, Fishbone) and corrective/preventive action (CAPA) activities for recurring operational failures or KPI regressions and track closure of action items.
  • Oversee the implementation and validation of barcode labeling, scanning procedures, and traceability workflows to ensure accuracy from receiving to shipping.
  • Coordinate warehouse layout changes, mezzanine installations, racking reconfiguration, and material handling equipment moves with minimal impact to live operations through phased implementation planning.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact during project escalations, rapidly triaging issues, coordinating cross-functional troubleshooting, and communicating resolution plans and impacts to stakeholders.
  • Deliver regular executive-level briefings and written project updates that show benefit realization, lessons learned, and recommendations for scaling or replication across sites.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc operational analyses (throughput modeling, transport cost modeling, SKU rationalization) to inform strategic decisions and project prioritization.
  • Assist procurement in drafting technical specifications for warehouse equipment and automation solutions, and participate in vendor RFP evaluations.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation, change logs, lessons-learned repositories, and closeout reports to support continuous improvement and auditability.
  • Contribute to business continuity and disaster recovery planning for distribution operations, including contingency routing and temporary storage strategies.
  • Support site managers with periodic performance reviews, staffing plan updates, and capacity planning during peak seasons or promotional events.
  • Participate in cross-site roll-up initiatives, sharing playbooks and success criteria to accelerate program deployment across multiple DCs.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) configuration and testing (e.g., Manhattan, Blue Yonder/JDA, HighJump, Oracle WMS, SAP EWM).
