Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct daily, weekly, and monthly warehouse safety inspections and site walkthroughs to identify hazards, non-compliance issues, and opportunities for improvement, documenting findings and tracking corrective actions to closure.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive safety programs tailored to warehouse operations, including forklift/powered industrial truck safety, personal protective equipment (PPE) programs, lockout/tagout (LOTO), confined space entry, and fall protection.
  • Lead incident and near-miss investigations using root cause analysis (5 Whys, Fishbone/Ishikawa) to determine causal factors, prepare investigation reports, recommend corrective actions, and monitor effectiveness to prevent recurrence.
  • Maintain regulatory compliance with OSHA, EPA (as applicable), DOT, state and local regulations, and company policies; conduct compliance audits and prepare documentation for internal and external inspections.
  • Design, deliver, and track engaging safety training for warehouse employees and supervisors, covering topics such as hazard recognition, PPE use, ergonomics, safe material handling, emergency response, and forklift operator training/validation.
  • Manage and coordinate the forklift certification program, including operator evaluations, refresher training, maintenance/inspection schedules, and corrective actions for unsafe operation.
  • Perform regular risk assessments and job hazard analyses (JHAs/JSA) for warehouse tasks and processes, prioritize hazards by risk, and implement mitigation strategies (engineering, administrative, PPE).
  • Develop and maintain safety metrics and dashboards (TRIR, DART, LTIR, near-miss rates, inspection completion, hazard abatement timeliness) and present monthly/quarterly safety performance reviews to leadership.
  • Implement and maintain a behavioral-based safety (BBS) program to reinforce safe behaviors, coaching supervisors, conducting observations, and tracking BBS metrics to drive cultural change.
  • Coordinate emergency preparedness and response planning, including fire drills, spill response, evacuation procedures, first-aid/CPR readiness, and maintaining emergency equipment and documentation.
  • Oversee contractor safety onboarding and monitoring, ensuring contractor compliance with site-specific safety requirements, permits, lockout/tagout coordination, and pre-job briefings.
  • Manage hazardous materials (HAZMAT) handling and storage programs, ensure proper labeling, SDS/MSDS management, and compliance with applicable HAZWOPER and DOT requirements.
  • Lead ergonomics initiatives to reduce musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) through workstation redesign, lift-assist equipment deployment, ergonomic assessments, and training on safe lifting techniques.
  • Oversee PPE selection, procurement, distribution, and compliance monitoring to ensure employees are provided appropriate protective equipment and trained on use and maintenance.
  • Implement and maintain safety management systems or EHS software (incident tracking, corrective action tracking, safety observations, training records) to centralize safety data and streamline reporting.
  • Conduct safety audits and gap analyses against ISO 45001, internal standards, or client-specific safety requirements; create remediation plans and follow-up to ensure timely closure.
  • Collaborate with operations, maintenance, HR, and procurement to integrate safety into process changes, new equipment installations, and facility projects, providing safety input during design and rollouts.
  • Develop and maintain written safety procedures, work instructions, permits, and signage to clearly communicate hazards and safe work methods to all warehouse personnel.
  • Drive continuous improvement by identifying cost-effective safety engineering solutions, recommend capital projects (guarding, ventilation, lighting, material handling aids), and quantify risk reduction benefits.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for workers’ compensation case coordination related to warehouse incidents, assist in return-to-work planning, and contribute to incident cost-reduction strategies.
  • Facilitate and chair the site safety committee and cross-functional safety meetings, fostering worker engagement, feedback loops, and recognition of safety improvements.
  • Maintain accurate and auditable safety records, compliance documentation, training logs, and injury/illness logs; prepare reports for corporate EHS, insurance providers, and regulatory agencies.
  • Support implementation of continuous monitoring technologies (video analytics, sensors, telematics) to enhance hazard detection, driver/operator behavior monitoring, and predictive safety analytics.
  • Conduct pre-shift safety briefings and toolbox talks, adapt messaging to shift-specific hazards, and maintain consistent communication channels to reinforce safety priorities.

Secondary Functions

  • Support cross-functional teams with safety input during process improvements, layout changes, and equipment installations to ensure hazard controls are integrated early.
  • Assist in ad-hoc data analysis of safety trends, incident causes, and near-miss reports to identify systemic issues and preventative measures.
  • Contribute to vendor and supplier safety evaluations and contract clauses to ensure third-party compliance with company safety standards.
  • Participate in corporate safety initiatives, standards rollouts, and benchmarking to align site practices with enterprise EHS goals.
  • Coordinate specialized audits and regulatory inspections, act as the site representative, and implement corrective action plans following audit findings.
  • Support occupational health initiatives including respiratory protection fit testing, hearing conservation, and health surveillance referrals as needed.
  • Help develop reward and recognition programs tied to safety milestones, near-miss reporting, and continuous improvement achievements.
  • Provide backup support for other EHS tasks such as environmental permitting, waste management coordination, or sustainability reporting when required.
  • Assist HR and leadership with disciplinary and coaching actions related to repeated unsafe behaviors, aligning actions with progressive corrective procedures.
  • Participate in incident command during major events, collaborating with emergency responders, and providing site-level operational knowledge.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Deep knowledge of OSHA regulations relevant to warehousing and distribution (29 CFR 1910), including powered industrial trucks, walking-working surfaces, PPE, and hazard communication.
  • Experience conducting safety audits, compliance inspections, and writing clear, actionable audit reports and corrective action plans.
  • Proven ability in incident investigation and root cause analysis methodologies (5 Whys, Fishbone Diagram, TapRoot).
  • Proficiency in developing and delivering adult-learning safety training programs, including forklift operator certification and retraining.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED required. Associates degree or relevant technical certificate in safety or industrial trades preferred.

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Environmental Health, Industrial Engineering, Business Administration, or related field preferred.
  • Certifications such as OSHA 10/30, CSP (Certified Safety Professional), CHST (Construction Health & Safety Technician), NEBOSH, or similar highly desirable.
