Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Conduct comprehensive security risk assessments and vulnerability analyses for warehouses, cross-docks and distribution centers—identifying operational, physical and procedural gaps, quantifying risk exposure, and delivering prioritized remediation roadmaps with cost/benefit analysis.
- Perform detailed site surveys and security system audits (CCTV camera coverage, lighting, access control points, fencing, perimeter detection, alarm systems and guard posts) and produce camera placement, sight-line and lighting upgrade recommendations that reduce blind spots and support evidence collection.
- Design and specify integrated security solutions (CCTV, VMS, access control, intrusion detection, license plate recognition and perimeter sensors), prepare technical requirements, system architecture diagrams and BOMs, and coordinate with IT and facilities for successful deployment and network integration.
- Develop and document warehouse-specific security policies, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and checklists for receiving, staging, storage, replenishment, loading/unloading and outbound shipping that reduce theft opportunities and promote chain-of-custody controls.
- Lead investigations into inventory shrink, employee theft, cargo diversion and suspicious activity—collect evidence, interview witnesses, prepare investigative reports, recommend disciplinary or legal action and liaise with law enforcement where required.
- Implement access control strategies including credentialing, visitor management, contractor access procedures, gated checkpoints, vehicle inspection protocols and perimeter staging controls to limit unauthorized entry and tailgating.
- Create and execute incident response and emergency action plans for warehouse-specific scenarios (theft-in-progress, active intruder, fire, hazardous materials spill, natural disaster) and coordinate drills with operations, local emergency services and corporate stakeholders.
- Advise on physical layout and material handling changes (dock configuration, staging areas, pallet flow and racking) to minimize exposure to theft, misrouting and loading errors while maintaining operational throughput.
- Define key security metrics and KPIs (shrink rate, incident response time, CCTV uptime, audit findings closure) and build executive dashboards and regular reporting to quantify program performance and ROI.
- Manage security vendor selection and RFP processes—compare hardware and software proposals, evaluate integrators, perform reference checks, negotiate contracts and SLAs, and oversee vendor installation and commissioning.
- Coordinate cybersecurity and OT/ICS considerations for security systems (VMS, access control controllers, edge devices) to ensure secure configurations, patching strategies and segmentation between corporate IT and operational technology networks.
- Deliver training programs for frontline warehouse personnel, supervisors and contract staff on loss prevention awareness, suspicious activity detection, proper handling of high-value items, and escalation procedures to reduce insider and external threats.
- Support inventory audit, cycle count and reconciliation processes by implementing physical controls, CCTV verification steps and procedural checkpoints that improve inventory integrity and reduce reconciliation discrepancies.
- Lead pilot projects and proof-of-concept deployments for emerging technologies (AI analytics, video analytics for anomaly detection, RFID tagging for high-value SKUs, geofencing for yard management) and evaluate operational impact, accuracy and scalability.
- Provide security design input for new-build distribution centers and remodels, including zoning for secure storage, controlled access rooms, secure loading docks, sally ports and secure employee entrances to ensure security is integrated into facility design from inception.
- Advise on chain-of-custody controls and tamper-evident packaging procedures for high-value or sensitive cargo, including seals, locks, escorted transfers and carrier vetting processes.
- Support regulatory and customer security audits (C-TPAT, TAPA, ISO 28000, customs/retailer requirements) by preparing documentation, conducting gap analyses and implementing corrective action plans to maintain certifications and contractual compliance.
- Establish and maintain active relationships with local law enforcement, port authorities and logistics partners to coordinate response protocols for cargo theft, diversion and cross-jurisdictional incidents.
- Manage project budgets for security upgrades and maintenance programs, prepare ROI analyses for investments in cameras, access systems and analytics, and track capital and operating expenditures against planned budgets.
- Design and implement yard security and gate operations improvements—including vehicle inspection lanes, secure marshalling yards, PLR (pre-load reconciliation) processes, and driver vetting—to reduce trailer theft and diversion risks.
- Conduct physical penetration tests and red-team exercises tailored to warehouse operations to validate controls, test detection and response capabilities, and identify human-factor vulnerabilities for remediation.
- Prepare and present executive briefings, board-level summaries and facility operational leaders’ workshops that translate technical findings into business impact and recommended prioritization for security investments.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of crime trends affecting logistics and warehousing (cargo theft hot spots, modus operandi, insider schemes) and proactively update mitigation strategies to address emerging risks.
- Provide recommendations and oversight for contractor and third-party security programs, including background screening, subcontractor access protocols, and performance monitoring.
Secondary Functions
- Support cross-functional projects with operations, IT and facilities teams to ensure security requirements are incorporated into automation, WMS and material handling changes.
- Assist in the preparation of business cases and capital expenditure requests for security technology and infrastructure upgrades.
- Participate in post-incident root-cause reviews and lessons-learned sessions and translate findings into procedural updates and training modules.
- Provide ad-hoc security consulting for new market or site expansions, including temporary facility security plans and phased deployment strategies.
- Collaborate with corporate risk and insurance teams to document risk mitigation efforts and support premium and claim discussions.
- Contribute to procurement and vendor management processes including SLA development, performance scorecards and maintenance plans.
- Maintain and curate a knowledge repository of security standards, past incident cases, and recommended technical specifications for repeatable deployment across sites.
- Provide mentorship and training to junior security staff and coordinate third-party guard force training programs.
