Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead daily warehouse operations by supervising supervisors and frontline teams across receiving, put-away, storage, picking, packing, shipping, and returns to ensure service-level targets and on-time delivery are consistently met.
  • Own operational KPIs (order accuracy, on-time shipping, dock-to-stock time, picks per hour, cycle count accuracy) and develop action plans to improve performance, reporting weekly results to operations leadership.
  • Design, configure, and optimize warehouse layouts, slotting strategies, and pick paths to maximize space utilization, reduce travel time, and increase throughput while maintaining accuracy goals.
  • Partner with IT and third-party integrators to implement and continuously tune Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), voice picking systems, RF scanning, and automation controls to align technology with operational processes.
  • Develop and execute standard operating procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and training programs for new and existing warehouse processes to ensure consistency and compliance.
  • Lead root-cause analysis (RCA) on operational disruptions — such as inaccurate inventory, mis-picks, or equipment downtime — and implement corrective and preventive actions to eliminate recurrence.
  • Forecast labor demand and create flexible staffing plans, weekly schedules, and overtime strategies to meet seasonal peaks and fluctuating order volumes while balancing cost objectives.
  • Manage inventory accuracy through rigorous cycle count programs, discrepancy investigations, reconciliation, and documentation to meet or exceed corporate inventory accuracy targets.
  • Oversee safety and regulatory compliance within the facility, enforce OSHA and company safety policies, conduct safety audits, and lead investigations after incidents to drive a zero-harm culture.
  • Coordinate inbound and outbound carrier relationships, dock scheduling, and manifest accuracy to minimize detention costs, reduce carrier claims, and improve on-time carrier performance.
  • Lead and mentor a team of frontline supervisors, conduct regular coaching sessions, performance reviews, and succession planning to develop internal talent and improve retention.
  • Execute continuous improvement initiatives using Lean, Kaizen, 5S, Six Sigma, or PDCA methodologies to reduce waste, shorten lead time, and deliver sustained productivity improvements.
  • Manage capital and operational equipment needs, including conveyors, sortation, palletizers, forklifts, and automation components; coordinate preventive maintenance and capital projects with facilities and engineering teams.
  • Own change management for process and system changes—communicate rollout plans, train impacted staff, validate process adoption, and measure post-implementation results.
  • Maintain SKU lifecycle management and collaborate with merchandising/planning teams to manage slow movers, obsoletes, and returns strategies to minimize carrying costs and maximize space efficiency.
  • Lead root-cause and claims investigations for damaged/short shipments and work cross-functionally with Quality, Customer Service, and Procurement to resolve customer issues and prevent recurrence.
  • Control operational budgets by monitoring labor, equipment, and supply costs; identify opportunities for cost reduction and process efficiencies while maintaining service levels.
  • Implement and sustain metrics dashboards and daily management routines (stand-ups, Gemba walks, weekly reviews) to ensure visibility, accountability, and rapid decision-making across shifts.
  • Drive capacity planning and scenario modeling to support business expansion, seasonal demand, and new product introductions, ensuring the warehouse can scale without sacrificing service or accuracy.
  • Partner with procurement and suppliers to qualify and onboard new material handling solutions, negotiate service contracts, and ensure spare parts and vendor SLAs support uptime goals.
  • Champion a customer-focused mindset with internal and external stakeholders, translating customer requirements into operational service agreements and measurable service levels.
  • Ensure accurate transactional data flows between WMS, ERP, and other systems; validate integrations and reconcile discrepancies to maintain reliable operational reporting.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis related to warehouse operations to inform leadership decisions and continuous improvement projects.
  • Contribute to the organization's data strategy and roadmap by identifying operational data needs and suggesting WMS or BI enhancements.
  • Collaborate with business units (IT, Safety, Procurement, Customer Service) to translate operational requirements into technical specifications for system enhancements or automation projects.
  • Participate in sprint planning and agile ceremonies with product and engineering teams when WMS or automation changes are delivered incrementally.
  • Assist with pilot planning and rollout activities for new automation, picking technologies, or process changes, including KPI baseline collection and post-pilot evaluation.
  • Provide subject matter expertise for site audits, supplier onboarding, and cross-functional RFP evaluations for warehouse technologies and 3PL partnerships.
  • Support sustainability initiatives by identifying opportunities to reduce packaging waste, improve energy use, and optimize transportation through better warehouse planning.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Deep knowledge of Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) such as Manhattan, Blue Yonder (JDA), SAP EWM, or Oracle WMS and experience configuring system rules for slotting, wave management, and put-away logic.
  • Hands-on experience with RF scanning, voice picking, barcode/RFID technologies, automated conveyors, sortation systems, and pallet handling equipment.
  • Strong data analysis skills with proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, Power Query), and familiarity with BI tools (Power BI, Tableau) to build dashboards and perform root-cause analysis.
  • Solid understanding of inventory control practices: cycle counting, ABC analysis, replenishment logic, and inventory reconciliation processes.
  • Experience with labor planning and workforce management tools, time & attendance systems, and creating labor models to meet service targets cost-effectively.
  • Familiarity with Lean, Kaizen, Six Sigma or similar continuous improvement methodologies and practical application to warehouse processes.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations, DOT rules for carrier handling, and other safety/compliance standards relevant to warehousing and distribution.
  • Capability in project management: scoping, timeline development, resource coordination, risk mitigation, and vendor management for implementation projects.
  • Understanding of ERP integration points and transactional data flows (inbound ASN, inventory transactions, shipping manifests) between WMS and ERP systems.
  • Experience analyzing throughput, takt time, and capacity planning to optimize staffing, shifts, and layout for peak performance.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Supply Chain, Logistics, Industrial Engineering, Operations Management, or related field.

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Industrial Engineering, Business Administration, or related discipline.
  • Certifications such as APICS/CPIM, Six Sigma Green/Black Belt, or Continuous Improvement certification are a plus.
