The Warehouse Team Member (Warehouse Associate) plays a critical role in day-to-day warehouse operations by executing accurate order fulfillment, inbound receiving, inventory control, and safe material handling. This role requires hands-on experience with warehouse management systems (WMS), RF scanners, pallet jacks and, where applicable, forklift operation. The ideal candidate consistently meets productivity and quality targets while following strict safety and compliance standards (OSHA, company policies), and contributes to continuous improvement of warehouse processes.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Accurately pick, pack and stage customer orders using paper-based or WMS-driven pick lists, verifying SKU numbers and quantities to meet daily order fulfillment targets and reduce pick errors.
  • Receive incoming shipments, inspect for damage, verify packing lists and purchase order information, and accurately record receipts in the warehouse management system to keep inventory data current.
  • Load and unload trucks and carriers safely and efficiently, coordinating with shipping partners and staging outbound freight to meet carrier cutoffs and LTL/FTL schedules.
  • Operate powered industrial equipment, such as forklifts and pallet jacks, in accordance with certification and safety protocols to move pallets and large shipments between staging, storage, and shipping areas.
  • Conduct regular cycle counts and full physical inventory counts, reconcile discrepancies between system and physical counts, and document adjustments or investigation steps to maintain inventory accuracy.
  • Pack items securely for shipment using appropriate materials and packaging standards, label cartons with accurate shipping labels and documentation, and prepare manifests and bills of lading as required.
  • Use RF scanners, barcode readers, and WMS interfaces to scan, track, and update item movements in real time, ensuring traceability across inbound, storage and outbound processes.
  • Maintain a clean, organized and safe work area by following 5S principles, performing routine housekeeping tasks, and promptly reporting hazards or equipment issues to supervisors.
  • Follow quality control procedures to inspect, test and rework product as needed, identifying and segregating damaged or non-conforming items and initiating return-to-vendor or disposition processes.
  • Prioritize and execute daily tasks according to workload, shipment schedules and KPI targets (accuracy, productivity, on-time shipments), adjusting priorities when urgent orders or exceptions occur.
  • Stage and palletize outbound orders to meet carrier and customer-specific loading instructions, verifying pallet integrity, applying stretch wrap and securing labeled pallets to shipping specifications.
  • Track and document returns, exchanges and damaged goods processes, including RMA handling, restocking eligible items and updating inventory status to reflect quarantines or scrap.
  • Participate in onboarding and training of new warehouse staff on safe operation of equipment, picking/packing standards, WMS use and company policies to ensure consistent execution across shifts.
  • Monitor inventory shelf life and FIFO rotation procedures for perishable or serialized goods, ensuring correct expiration date handling and accurate lot/serial traceability.
  • Execute cross-dock activities when required by moving incoming freight directly to outbound staging without placing into storage to reduce handling and accelerate delivery.
  • Coordinate with scheduling, customer service and transportation teams to confirm delivery windows, expedite critical shipments, and resolve discrepancies that could delay customer deliveries.
  • Perform basic preventive maintenance checks on warehouse equipment, report deficiencies, and coordinate repairs to minimize downtime and preserve operational continuity.
  • Maintain accurate paperwork and electronic records for hazardous materials (if applicable), including proper segregation, labeling and handling per company policy and regulatory requirements.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by identifying process inefficiencies, suggesting workflow changes, participating in Kaizen events and helping implement standard work documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety, health and environmental regulations by following PPE requirements, lockout/tagout procedures, and participating in safety training and incident investigations.
  • Execute light assembly, kitting and product customization tasks as required by customer orders, ensuring correct component inclusion and final product quality before shipment.
  • Assist with inventory forecasting data collection by reporting stock levels, slow-moving SKUs and demand variance observations to inventory planning or purchasing teams.

Secondary Functions

  • Serve as a backup for specialized roles such as shipping scheduler, returns processor, or cycle count lead during absences to maintain continuity of operations.
  • Collaborate with the receiving team to handle exceptions such as overages, shortages, and damaged goods, escalating issues and preparing discrepancy reports for procurement or vendors.
  • Help implement and enforce packing standards and packaging optimization projects to reduce freight damage and lower shipping costs while meeting brand presentation requirements.
  • Assist in onboarding and occasional cross-training of associates on alternate shifts to maintain flexible staffing and coverage for peak periods and seasonal spikes.
  • Participate in safety committees or daily huddles to communicate operational issues, highlight improvement ideas, and review upcoming shipment priorities and special handling needs.
  • Support data collection for warehouse KPIs (e.g., picks per hour, accuracy, dock-to-stock time) by completing required logs and providing frontline feedback for dashboard accuracy.
  • Coordinate with quality and compliance teams to manage product quarantines, return-to-vendor workflows, and disposition decisions for damaged or expired goods.
  • Aid in special projects such as facility moves, layout changes, inventory system migrations or seasonal ramp-ups by performing assigned tasks and documenting as-built workflows.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) proficiency — experience with systems such as Oracle NetSuite WMS, SAP EWM, Manhattan, Blue Yonder, or equivalent, and comfortable completing transactions via RF handheld devices.
  • RF scanner and barcode technology operation — scanning, troubleshooting common scanner errors, and maintaining scanning accuracy in high-volume environments.
  • Certified forklift operation and powered industrial truck (PIT) experience — safe operation of sit-down, stand-up, reach and counterbalance forklifts with current certification and a strong safety record.
  • Material handling equipment use — skilled with pallet jacks, hand trucks, dollies, stretch wrappers, and basic loading/unloading tooling.
  • Shipping, receiving and carrier documentation — preparing BOLs, manifests, pickup paperwork and familiarity with LTL/FTL processes and carrier requirements.
  • Inventory control and cycle counting — implementing FIFO/LIFO rotation, performing reconciliations, and investigating inventory discrepancies to maintain accurate stock records.
  • Packing and crating best practices — selecting appropriate protective materials, cartonization and palletizing techniques to minimize damage in transit.
  • Basic computer literacy — using MS Excel for simple data entry, track and trace, and communicating via email or collaboration tools.
  • HAZMAT awareness and handling (if applicable) — knowledge of labeling, segregation and documentation for regulated materials and familiarity with DOT or company-specific protocols.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude — performing routine equipment checks and coordinating with maintenance or vendors for repairs to reduce downtime.
  • Quality inspection techniques — identifying defects, documenting non-conformances, and following return or rework procedures.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED, or equivalent practical experience in warehouse, distribution or logistics roles.
