Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Supervise and lead day-to-day labor activities across receiving, putaway, picking, packing, staging, and shipping to meet service-level agreements and customer delivery expectations; create a positive, accountable team culture.
  • Develop, execute, and adjust daily and weekly staffing plans and shift schedules using labor forecasting, historical volume profiles, and real-time order loads to achieve productivity targets while minimizing overtime spend.
  • Monitor and drive productivity KPIs (picks per hour, lines per hour, units per man-hour), quality KPIs (order accuracy, returns rate), and service KPIs (on-time shipments, dock-to-stock time); provide coaching and corrective action to meet targets.
  • Use the Warehouse Management System (WMS) and barcode scanning technology to direct workflows, troubleshoot system issues, enforce scanning and labeling compliance, and validate system transactions affecting inventory accuracy.
  • Conduct daily shift huddles, communicate priorities, safety alerts, and performance goals; escalate operational constraints and resource needs to the Warehouse Manager or Operations leadership.
  • Hire, train, mentor, and develop frontline associates and team leads; manage onboarding, cross-training programs, certification tracking (forklift, pallet jack), and ongoing skills development to improve flexibility and retention.
  • Lead and enforce safety policies and procedures, including PPE requirements, lockout/tagout, safe lifting protocols, and accident/near-miss reporting; conduct safety audits and coordinate corrective actions to ensure OSHA compliance.
  • Manage labor vendors and temporary staffing relationships — plan agency usage, verify timecards, maintain vendor compliance with site rules, and integrate contingent workforce into daily operations.
  • Coordinate and lead cycle counts, inventory reconciliations, root-cause investigations for variances, and implement corrective actions to improve inventory accuracy and reduce write-offs.
  • Implement process improvements and Lean initiatives (5S, Kaizen events, standard work) to increase throughput, reduce waste, and shorten process touches while maintaining quality and safety.
  • Manage performance documentation including progressive discipline, written coaching, performance improvement plans, and recognition programs to ensure a motivated, accountable workforce.
  • Supervise dock operations including appointment scheduling, yard management, trailer loading/unloading, and carrier coordination to minimize detention and dwell time and to maintain dock fluidity.
  • Oversee equipment usage and operator compliance (forklifts, reach trucks, pallet jacks), ensure preventive maintenance schedules are followed, and escalate equipment needs or repairs to maintenance.
  • Prepare and deliver daily/weekly operational reports — headcount, productivity, quality, OT spend, and KPI trends — to operations leadership; recommend corrective actions based on data analysis.
  • Partner with Inventory Control and Quality teams to investigate and resolve shipping errors, customer claims, product damage, and returns processing; implement preventative measures.
  • Enforce SOPs and work instructions for each warehouse function; update documentation as processes change and train staff on new or revised procedures.
  • Manage seasonal workforce surges and plan peak labor strategies (holiday, promotional periods) including hiring, staggered shifts, extended hours, and cross-training to handle high-volume demand.
  • Manage time and attendance compliance, approve timecards, monitor absenteeism/tardiness trends, and work with HR to maintain accurate payroll records and labor cost controls.
  • Facilitate change management for new systems, process changes, or continuous improvement projects by communicating impact, training staff, and tracking adoption metrics.
  • Handle escalations from frontline staff and customers related to inventory availability, order discrepancies, or operational issues and coordinate timely resolution.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and customer audit requirements, supporting periodic audits with documentation, process walk-throughs, and corrective action plans.
  • Plan and execute layout changes or slotting optimizations in collaboration with supply chain/planning teams to improve travel time, reduce congestion, and increase pick density.
  • Drive cost control initiatives including minimizing waste, shrink, damages, and unnecessary overtime while meeting service and quality objectives.
  • Lead cross-functional communication and daily operational alignment with planning, procurement, transportation, and customer service to ensure end-to-end fulfillment performance.
  • Create succession plans and identify high-potential associates for development into supervisory and management roles to ensure bench strength and continuity.

Secondary Functions

  • Participate in technology implementations and upgrades (WMS, labor management systems, handheld devices), providing frontline feedback and supporting end-user training.
  • Support ad-hoc operational projects such as layout redesigns, new product introductions, and pilot programs for automation or productivity tools.
  • Assist with budget planning inputs related to headcount, overtime projections, and operational supplies.
  • Collaborate with HR on recruitment campaigns, diversity and inclusion initiatives, and retention strategies targeted at warehouse roles.
  • Contribute to monthly continuous improvement reports and present operational improvement proposals to leadership.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for warehouse operational best practices and help develop training curricula for new hires and team leads.
  • Support vendor and carrier onboarding activities relevant to dock and yard operations, including safety orientations and site access procedures.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Warehouse Management System (WMS) proficiency — experience with systems such as Manhattan, Blue Yonder (JDA), SAP EWM, Oracle WMS Cloud, or similar; ability to interpret system transactions and resolve WMS discrepancies.
  • Labor planning and forecasting — ability to create daily/weekly labor plans using historical demand, seasonality, and service-level targets; experience with labor management systems (LMS) is a plus.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 3–5+ years supervising warehouse teams in distribution, e-commerce fulfillment, or retail distribution centers, with demonstrable results in productivity improvement, safety record, and team development.
  • Experience with enterprise WMS and labor management systems, and proven track record implementing process improvements (Lean, 5S, Kaizen).
  • Certifications such as OSHA 10/30, Certified Logistics Technician (CLT), APICS/CPIM, or Lean/Six Sigma Yellow/Green Belt are advantageous.
