Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Manage safe and efficient movement of trailers and containers on the yard: spot, stage, couple/uncouple, and reposition trailers to support dock door assignments and improve loading/unloading flow while minimizing yard congestion.
  • Operate yard trucks (hostlers), yard tractors, and terminal tractors to move trailers between the lot, docks, and staging areas in compliance with company procedures and DOT/local regulations.
  • Perform pre- and post-shift vehicle and equipment inspections (yard trucks, tractors, forklifts) and document defects, immediately reporting safety-critical faults to maintenance or supervision to prevent operational delays.
  • Conduct thorough trailer and container checks on arrival and prior to departure, verifying seal integrity, load security, visible damage, and compliance with shipping documentation and hazardous materials rules when applicable.
  • Coordinate with dock supervisors, shipping/receiving clerks, and drivers to prioritize trailer moves that align with production schedules, driver check-ins, and expedited shipments to maintain on-time performance.
  • Use yard management systems (YMS), terminal software, or radio/handheld devices to log trailer status, location, inbound/outbound paperwork, check-in/check-out times, and any holds or exceptions to maintain accurate yard inventory.
  • Spot trailers to assigned dock doors safely and precisely, ensuring adequate clearance and proper chocking to facilitate fast, safe loading and unloading by warehouse personnel.
  • Assist with trailer loading and unloading activities as needed—securing straps, guiding forklift operators, and performing light pallet handling when workload or staffing levels require cross-functional support.
  • Maintain yard cleanliness and organization by removing debris, securing loose equipment, and ensuring staging and parking areas are clearly marked and free of hazards that could impede safe movement.
  • Enforce yard traffic patterns, speed limits, and safety signage; direct onsite vehicle and pedestrian traffic when necessary to prevent incidents and maintain continuous operations.
  • Inspect and document incoming freight counts and visible discrepancies at the trailer level, promptly escalating potential inventory variances, damaged shipments, or missing paperwork to inventory control or receiving leads.
  • Apply lock-out/tag-out procedures and follow confined space or fall-protection protocols when required for trailer service or repair operations, coordinating with maintenance teams to complete corrective work safely.
  • Safely handle and transport hazardous materials consignments in accordance with company hazmat policies and DOT requirements, ensuring accurate placarding, documentation, and segregation from non-hazardous freight.
  • Perform trailer sanitization, basic servicing, and light preventative maintenance tasks (checking lights, couplers, tires, air lines) when appropriate and communicate larger mechanical issues for scheduled repair.
  • Facilitate efficient driver check-in/check-out procedures: verify driver credentials, collect/return paperwork, inspect trailers, record seals, and communicate load or staging instructions clearly and professionally.
  • Support inventory reconciliation and cycle count activities by locating staged trailers or containers, verifying bill of lading details, and assisting inventory teams with physical counts and discrepancy resolution.
  • Monitor yard security by verifying incoming drivers, checking seals and documentation, reporting unauthorized persons or suspicious activity, and following site-specific security protocols to protect assets.
  • Perform basic forklift operation to move pallets or equipment between trailers and staging areas as workload demands, following safe lift practices and maintaining load integrity.
  • Participate in daily safety briefings, pre-shift meetings, and continuous improvement initiatives by providing feedback from the yard environment to reduce delays, damage, and non-conformances.
  • Maintain accurate logs, driver manifests, and trailer movement records to support billing, detention claims, and transportation audits; ensure documentation is legible, complete, and submitted per process timelines.
  • Support emergency response by assisting with incident containment, emergency vehicle access, evacuation of affected areas, and incident reporting in accordance with company emergency response plans.
  • Execute seasonal and capacity surge plans by adapting staging strategies, assisting with temporary yard layout changes, and working flexible shifts to meet peak inbound/outbound volumes.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist procurement and fleet teams with coordinating temporary trailer rentals, swap-outs, and acceptance/return logistics to support capacity planning.
  • Participate in cross-training to support dock, receiving, or shipping functions during high-volume periods or staffing shortages.
  • Help maintain and update yard signage, parking layouts, and dock door assignments to improve visibility, reduce misdrops, and increase throughput.
  • Support continuous improvement and root-cause analysis efforts by documenting recurring yard bottlenecks and suggesting process changes to supervisors.
  • Provide mentorship and onboarding support to new yard associates, sharing safe work practices, equipment operation tips, and site-specific procedures.
  • Perform basic administrative tasks such as filing movement reports, scanning paperwork into TMS/YMS, and assisting with driver correspondence when required.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Certified forklift operation (counterbalance, reach trucks) and demonstrated safe lift truck experience in a high-volume warehouse environment.
  • Proven experience operating yard trucks/terminal tractors/hostlers and trailer spotting with an emphasis on safe coupling/uncoupling procedures.
