Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Lead and supervise a team of warehouse associates within the assigned zone: assign daily tasks, manage shift priorities, and balance workload to meet inbound and outbound service levels while minimizing overtime.
- Monitor and drive zone productivity and quality KPIs (pieces per hour, orders per hour, lines per hour, order accuracy, on-time shipping), implementing corrective actions when targets are not met.
- Enforce and audit compliance with safety regulations (OSHA, company safety policies) and personal protective equipment (PPE) rules; conduct daily safety briefings and incident investigations.
- Oversee picking, packing, staging, and shipping activities to ensure orders are accurate, properly packaged, and shipped on schedule; coordinate with shipping carriers as required.
- Manage receiving and putaway operations for the zone: verify inbound receipts, perform initial inspections, direct putaway locations, and update WMS to maintain inventory accuracy.
- Conduct cycle counts and participate in physical inventory initiatives for the zone; identify variances, perform root-cause analysis, and execute corrective measures to improve inventory accuracy.
- Train, coach, and develop associates on SOPs, WMS operations, RF scanning, forklift operation, and safe material handling techniques to sustain high performance and reduce errors.
- Perform frontline performance management including providing feedback, documenting performance issues, delivering coaching plans, and participating in progressive discipline when needed.
- Create and maintain accurate zone documentation: work instructions, checklists, daily logs, shift reports, and handover notes to ensure continuity across shifts.
- Operate and coordinate the use of warehouse equipment (forklifts, pallet jacks, conveyors, sorters) safely and ensure routine maintenance requests are submitted and tracked.
- Collaborate with planning, scheduling, and labor management to forecast zone labor needs, schedule staff appropriately, and manage temporary/seasonal labor during peak periods.
- Escalate material shortages, equipment failures, quality issues, and safety incidents to warehouse management promptly and follow through to resolution.
- Implement continuous improvement and Lean initiatives within the zone: identify waste, lead Kaizen events, test process changes, and track improvements to throughput and cost.
- Maintain high standards of housekeeping and 5S in the zone: ensure aisles, staging areas, and workstations are orderly and compliant with inspection requirements.
- Coordinate cross-functional activity with Quality Assurance, Maintenance, Transportation, and Inventory Control to resolve order exceptions and reduce cycle-times.
- Execute inbound/outbound manifests, pallet configurations, and staging plans to maximize trailer utilization and reduce detention times.
- Manage time and attendance within the zone: approve timesheets, monitor punctuality, and address absenteeism to preserve productivity.
- Lead onboarding and shadowing of new hires within the zone, including skills assessments and sign-offs on critical tasks and certifications.
- Conduct pre-shift briefings and post-shift debriefs to communicate priorities, safety notes, KPI performance, and outstanding issues to the incoming shift.
- Ensure compliance with product handling requirements (temperature control, hazardous materials labeling, fragile/oversized items) and follow special handling instructions.
- Prepare and deliver daily/weekly performance reports and zone metrics to supervisors and operations managers, highlighting trends and recommended corrective actions.
- Support returns processing (RMA) where applicable: coordinate inspection, disposition, and reintegration of returned inventory or scrap procedures.
- Monitor inventory replenishment processes in the zone to avoid stockouts and support uninterrupted order fulfillment.
- Implement and enforce loss prevention measures including proper access control, shrinkage reduction techniques, and documentation of unexplained inventory variances.
Secondary Functions
- Serve as a subject matter expert for the zone during internal and external audits; prepare evidence, lead walkthroughs, and implement audit findings.
- Support WMS upgrades and rollouts by testing zone-specific workflows, training staff on new functionality, and providing feedback to IT.
- Assist operations leadership with root cause analysis and corrective action plans for recurring operational issues across zones.
- Participate in cross-functional initiative teams focused on cost reduction, capacity planning, and service level improvement.
- Contribute to seasonal workforce planning, onboarding of temporary staff, and rapid scaling of operations during peak demand.
