A Warehousing Engineer (also known as Warehouse Systems Engineer, Distribution Center Engineer, or Material Handling Engineer) is responsible for designing, implementing, commissioning and continuously improving warehouse layouts, material handling systems, automation, and process controls. This role partners with operations, safety, IT, procurement, and vendors to deliver reliable, efficient, and safe fulfillment environments. Key focus areas include WMS/WES integration, automation/robotics, throughput optimization, inventory control, CAPEX projects, and operator training.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead end-to-end design and engineering of warehouse layouts and material handling systems (conveyors, sortation, ASRS, robotics), producing detailed drawings, BOMs and justification analyses that align throughput, storage, and labor objectives.
  • Develop and own project scopes, schedules, budgets, and risk registers for medium to large CAPEX projects, coordinating cross-functional stakeholders to ensure on-time and on-budget delivery.
  • Specify, evaluate and select material handling equipment and automation vendors, manage procurement activities, negotiate contracts and verify vendor deliverables against technical specifications and safety standards.
  • Design and implement integrations between Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), Warehouse Execution Systems (WES) and automation/control systems, authoring functional specifications and supervising systems integrators during build and test phases.
  • Lead commissioning, FAT/SAT (Factory/Site Acceptance Tests), and site acceptance testing for automation and control systems; create test plans, acceptance criteria, and perform validation testing with operations teams.
  • Troubleshoot complex mechanical, electrical and control system issues during implementation and live operations, applying root cause analysis (5 Whys, Ishikawa) and driving corrective action plans to restore uptime and reliability.
  • Establish and maintain preventive maintenance strategies for automation and material handling assets, collaborate with maintenance teams to build MRO plans, spare parts lists and reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) tasks.
  • Create and maintain engineering documentation including layout drawings, P&IDs, control narratives, PLC code repositories, wiring diagrams and change logs to ensure traceability and maintainability.
  • Design processes and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for order fulfillment, put-away, replenishment and returns that reduce touches, eliminate waste and improve accuracy; lead operator training and onboarding for new systems and workflows.
  • Develop and track performance metrics (KPI) such as throughput, orders per hour, picks per hour, inventory accuracy, on-time shipments and equipment availability; use data to identify continuous improvement opportunities and present findings to leadership.
  • Apply lean manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies to reduce lead times, optimize labor and minimize errors; lead Kaizen events and pilot process changes with measurable ROI and expected benefits.
  • Ensure designs and operations comply with OSHA, NFPA, local building codes, fire safety, and other regulatory requirements; partner with EHS to perform risk assessments and implement mitigation measures.
  • Manage electrical and controls design requirements, oversee PLC programming, HMI design, SCADA and network architecture to ensure secure, reliable and maintainable automation solutions.
  • Perform capacity planning and simulation modeling to validate system performance under peak loads and seasonal variability; produce scenario analyses that inform capital allocation and layout decisions.
  • Run feasibility studies and business cases for warehouse automation, estimating TCO, ROI, payback period and sensitivity to labor and demand changes.
  • Drive energy efficiency and sustainability initiatives in the warehouse—evaluate equipment energy profiles, implement regenerative drives, LED lighting and material flow optimizations to reduce operational carbon footprint.
  • Coordinate civil, structural and utilities work for site modifications, ensuring foundations, mezzanines, and power distribution meet engineering and vendor requirements.
  • Mentor and coach junior engineers and cross-functional team members on best practices in material handling, controls, and project execution; contribute to hiring and technical interviews.
  • Maintain an up-to-date technology watch on robotics, AMRs, AS/RS, vision systems and IoT-enabled sensors to recommend pilot programs and phased rollouts for competitive advantage.
  • Lead cross-site standardization efforts to create reusable design libraries, templates and an engineering playbook that reduces deployment time and supports multi-site rollouts.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis to answer operational questions and validate engineering hypotheses.
  • Contribute to the organization's data strategy and roadmap by identifying opportunities for telemetry, dashboards and automated alerts.
  • Collaborate with business units to translate data needs into engineering requirements and measurable success criteria.
  • Participate in sprint planning and agile ceremonies within the data engineering or automation teams to prioritize engineering tasks and improvements.
  • Provide technical support for continuous improvement pilots, collect baseline data, run A/B tests and track performance versus targets.
  • Prepare technical reports and executive summaries for leadership that outline risks, recommendations, cost impacts and timelines for proposed initiatives.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) and Warehouse Execution Systems (WES) configuration and integration experience (e.g., Manhattan, Blue Yonder/JDA, SAP EWM, HighJump).
  • Automation and robotics systems knowledge including AMR/AGV, ASRS, pick-to-light, sortation, conveyors and robotic pick-and-place deployments.
  • PLC programming and controls engineering skills (Siemens, Allen-Bradley/ControlLogix, Rockwell) plus HMI/SCADA experience.
  • Strong systems integration experience — middleware, APIs, MES/WMS/WES integration patterns and event-driven architectures.
  • Electrical & mechanical engineering fundamentals: BOM generation, P&IDs, wiring diagrams, motor sizing, drive selection and pneumatics/hydraulics basics.
  • Project management and CAPEX lifecycle management, including scheduling tools (MS Project, Primavera) and cost control.
  • Data analysis and visualization (SQL, Python or R, Excel advanced, Power BI or Tableau) for KPI tracking and root cause analysis.
  • CAD and layout tools: AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar for creating and reviewing warehouse layouts and equipment drawings.
  • Lean, Six Sigma or continuous improvement methodologies (DMAIC, Kaizen, value stream mapping).
  • Safety, compliance and regulatory knowledge (OSHA, NFPA, local codes) and experience conducting HAZOPs and risk assessments.
  • Vendor selection, RFP creation, technical bid evaluation and contract negotiation experience.
  • Preventive maintenance planning, reliability engineering and spare parts optimization knowledge.
  • Familiarity with cloud/edge computing concepts for IoT device telemetry and real-time monitoring systems.
  • Strong understanding of inventory control practices: cycle counting, ABC analysis, lot/serial tracking and reconciliation processes.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Industrial, Electrical, Systems, Manufacturing or similar Engineering discipline.

Preferred Education:

  • Master's degree in Engineering, Supply Chain, Systems Engineering or an MBA; or equivalent technical certifications.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 3–8 years in warehouse engineering, operations engineering, automation, or related roles for mid-level positions; 8+ years for senior roles.

Preferred:

  • Hands-on experience implementing automation and WMS/WES integrations in distribution centers, proven track record leading CAPEX projects, and demonstrated ability to deliver measurable throughput, accuracy and safety improvements. Relevant certifications such as Six Sigma, PMP, OSHA 30 or vendor-specific automation certifications are a plus.
