Primary Functions

  • Design and manage waste reduction and recycling programs (source reduction, reuse, recycling, organics diversion, and resource recovery), creating KPI frameworks, operational procedures, and employee engagement strategies to increase diversion rates.
  • Prepare technical reports, environmental management plans, and permit applications (waste storage, transport, treatment, and disposal permits) with clear recommendations, cost-benefit analysis, timelines, and implementation milestones.
  • Lead hazardous waste characterization, classification, and manifesting activities, including chain-of-custody documentation, waste profiling, and coordination with licensed transporters and treatment/disposal facilities.
  • Conduct life-cycle assessments (LCA) and carbon footprinting for waste-related activities and programs, quantifying greenhouse gas reductions from diversion activities and feeding results into corporate sustainability reporting.

  • Design and cost electrical/equipment retrofits for waste and recycling operations (compact balers, organics composters, shredders), including ROI estimates and space/layout optimization for on-site processing.
  • Manage multi-site projects and pilots (e.g., organics collection pilot, industrial symbiosis projects), coordinating cross-functional teams, setting objectives, tracking milestones, and reporting outcomes to sponsors and funders.
  • Conduct risk assessments for waste transfer, treatment, and storage activities, identify potential operational and environmental liabilities, and recommend engineering and administrative controls to reduce exposure.
  • Support emergency response planning for spills, releases, and hazardous waste incidents by developing site-specific emergency response plans, coordinating with EHS teams, and participating in drills.
  • Prepare and support regulatory inspections and audits (internal and external), compiling required documentation, corrective action plans, and follow-up activities to demonstrate compliance and continuous improvement.
  • Analyze financial implications of waste streams, including tipping fees, transportation costs, and potential revenue from recyclables, and prepare business cases and budget estimates for waste reduction projects.
  • Advise on permitting and closure requirements for legacy waste storage, including soil, groundwater, and contaminated materials; coordinate sampling, remediation strategies, and liaison with regulatory agencies.
